We had an amazing time! Beautiful location and a great guide!

Torridon’s towering ridgelines and snow-filled gullies offer a remarkable winter mountaineering experience, ideal for those looking to push beyond standard hillwalking. This 5-day guided course introduces classic Scottish Grade I/II winter routes, combining guided days out with instruction to help you build essential skills for independent winter adventures.
Each day starts with a weather and avalanche forecast review before heading into the Torridon hills. With their close-packed peaks and steep ridgelines, this area provides a varied playground for winter mountaineering. Expect hands-on coaching while tackling well-known objectives such as the Liathach Traverse, the pinnacles of Am Bodach, or the corrie routes on Beinn Alligin. The instruction is tailored to your level, with your guide focusing on safe travel, kit use and reading the terrain. By the end of the week, you’ll have practical experience navigating winter ridges, climbing gullies, and managing snow conditions with confidence.
During the week, you’ll learn how to assess avalanche risk, use crampons and axes effectively, and move safely on snow and mixed ground. Skills sessions are integrated into the day’s objectives so that learning happens naturally while progressing through real terrain. Depending on weather and group goals, you may explore nearby areas like Fisherfield or Kintail. In addition to the technical focus, you'll enjoy the quiet, remote feel of the Highlands in winter—far removed from busier southern areas. Evening reviews and route planning help reinforce the learning so that you leave with the ability to make good decisions in similar terrain in the future.
Includes six nights of accommodation in Lochcarron at selected guest houses such as Rock Villa or Castle Cottage. You’ll be well fed with homemade breakfasts, packed lunches, and freshly prepared evening meals—ideal for warming up after a day in the hills. All guiding, local transport, specialist gear, and pick-up/drop-off at Strathcarron station for arrival or onward travel are included.
Perfect for those arranging their own accommodation locally, such as at Lochcarron B&Bs or great value cottages. You’ll still benefit from full guiding, kit, and daily pick-ups from your chosen place to begin each mountain day. Meals and accommodation are not included, but we can recommend reliable local providers.
Based in the Highland village of Lochcarron, this trip gives direct access to the Torridon mountain range—one of Scotland’s most impressive clusters of peaks. The area includes Liathach, Beinn Alligin, and Beinn Eighe, all offering technical and scenic winter routes. Torridon’s geographical layout means it packs in steep climbs and narrow ridgelines within a compact area, reducing travel time and maximising time on the hill.
Lochcarron is well-connected via the Kyle of Lochalsh rail line and offers a relaxed Highland setting with quality food spots, friendly locals, and easy access to the mountains. Free station transfers are provided for those arriving by train, and we’re happy to help you plan your route if you're coming from further afield like Inverness, Glasgow or Fort William.
Available with the Fully Inclusive option. You'll stay in handpicked guest houses in or near Lochcarron such as Rock Villa or Castle Cottage. These are locally owned, warm and welcoming with good access to shops, cafes, and the lochside. You’ll be well looked after with full board meals, and there's time in the evenings to relax and review the day’s experience in front of a fire or with a good meal.
Participants should be in good physical condition and have previous experience of winter walking or summer scrambling. This is a physically demanding week with five consecutive mountain days, so stamina and confidence on steep, uneven ground are essential.
No technical climbing experience is required, but you’ll get the most out of the trip if you’re comfortable being outdoors in winter conditions for full days. All safety equipment is provided, and your guide will support your progression throughout the week.
The guides are based full-time in Lochcarron, bringing unrivalled local knowledge to every trip. From reading the weather to understanding the snowpack, they bring the mountain experience to life while ensuring safe, supportive instruction throughout. Their ability to adapt routes to suit the conditions and group experience means every trip stays challenging and enjoyable.
With over 25 years of guiding in the NW Highlands, they are one of the most experienced outfits in Scotland. They pride themselves on quality instruction, great local food, and a flexible pricing structure with Trip Only and Fully Inclusive options to suit your budget. Their local roots, sustainability approach, and commitment to small groups mean you'll enjoy a well-rounded and personal experience in Scotland's most dramatic winter landscapes.

This course is designed for those who already have some winter walking or summer scrambling experience and want to progress onto more technical ground. You should be comfortable walking in winter conditions and confident with basic hill skills such as navigation and route planning.
You don’t need prior experience with crampons or ice axes, as these skills will be taught throughout the week. However, a good level of mountain fitness is required since we’ll be out on the hill for five consecutive days, often covering steep terrain and variable snow conditions.
The ‘Trip Only’ option gives you full flexibility to organise your own accommodation and meals. You'll still receive the same expert guiding and instruction each day, plus daily local transport from your accommodation and all necessary technical gear provided.
The ‘Fully Inclusive’ option takes care of everything: accommodation, all meals, daily logistics and instruction. You’ll be staying in a local guest house, enjoying fresh, homemade food and relaxing each evening knowing everything else is sorted for you.
Expect dramatic ridges, deep gullies and rugged summits with steep climbs and narrow traverses. Many of the routes, such as the Liathach traverse or Beinn Alligin's horns, feel almost Alpine in nature and demand good footwork and confidence with heights.
You'll likely encounter snow-covered ground, icy rock sections, and the need for both hands and feet to progress on some routes. These conditions make Torridon ideal for practising winter mountaineering skills in a more adventurous setting.
Absolutely. Instruction is a core part of this course. You’ll be taught how to use crampons and ice axes properly, including self-arrest techniques, front-pointing, and movement in steep snow. Ropework such as belaying, anchor building, and short-roping may also be covered depending on conditions and group ability.
You'll also spend time developing essential mountain safety skills like avalanche awareness, interpreting weather forecasts, and emergency procedures such as shelter building and snow holing. Navigation in winter conditions is also a major focus, including compass work and white-out strategies.
Each day starts with breakfast and a weather/avalanche briefing before we head into the mountains. We'll typically be out for 6–8 hours each day, moving through challenging ground and learning as we go.
After returning, there’s time to relax, debrief, and chat through the day. For those on the Fully Inclusive option, you'll be looked after with home-cooked meals and a warm base to rest and recover for the next day.
To maintain safety and maximise learning, we keep the instructor-to-client ratio low at 1:4. This allows plenty of individual support and tailored coaching throughout the week.
Smaller group sizes also allow for greater flexibility in the routes we can tackle and the skills we can focus on, giving you a more rewarding and personal experience.
