Course Breakdown
The five-day Canyon Leader course is spread over two weekends to accommodate those with full-time jobs. The course begins with an introduction to canyoning principles, safety protocols, and equipment handling.
Day 1-2: Fundamentals and Safety - You will start with learning the basics of canyoning, including understanding the sport’s unique techniques and equipment. Safety protocols are emphasised, covering personal and team safety, hazard assessment, and emergency procedures. Practical exercises include basic rope work, knots, and abseiling.
Day 3: Intermediate Techniques and Risk Management - The focus shifts to more advanced techniques such as rigging and anchoring systems, belaying, and rescue techniques. You will also learn to assess and manage risks, including evaluating canyon conditions and making informed decisions. Practical sessions involve setting up descenders and navigating more complex terrain.
Day 4: Leadership and Group Management - Leadership skills are crucial for a canyon leader. This day covers group management, communication skills, and decision-making in challenging situations. You will practise leading a team through various canyon environments, ensuring all members are safe and confident.
Day 5: Practical Assessment and Review The final day includes a comprehensive practical assessment where you will demonstrate your ability to lead a team through a moderate risk canyon. This will include rigging, abseiling, and implementing safety measures. The day ends with a review and feedback session, ensuring you understand your strengths and areas for improvement.
Throughout the course, theoretical knowledge is reinforced by practical application, ensuring you can apply what you've learned in real-world scenarios. The course is supported by the V7 Academy level 2 online training resource, providing in-depth coverage of all theoretical and practical elements.
Location
Our activity centre is based in Ingleton, North Yorkshire, offering easy access to the gorgeous canyons of the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District National Park.
The meeting point will be given to you before the scheduled date.
Prerequisites
To join the Canyon Leader course, you must be at least 16 years old, have a good level of fitness and swimming ability, and possess some experience in lead canyoning groups. Familiarity with abseiling and setting up a descender is also required.
