What is the UKCA?
The UK Canyoning Association (UKCA) develops standards for canyoning, gorge walking and related vertical water activities in the UK. It trains and assesses leaders and instructors to work safely in ghylls, canyons and waterfall environments with appropriate ropework and rescue skills.
Introduction to Canyoning gives participants and aspiring leaders foundational experience in moving through canyon environments under supervision. Higher UKCA awards build technical rope skills, group management and professional practice for commercial and voluntary leaders.

Choosing a course
Canyoning requires confidence in cold water, heights and uneven ground. Introduction courses are suitable for adventurous beginners; leader pathways expect prior gorge experience and fitness. Check swimming requirements and what personal kit you must bring.
UK weather and water levels dictate when centres run courses. Wetsuits, helmets and harnesses are usually provided, but footwear and thermal layers may be your responsibility. Leave a comment when you book if you are working towards a leader award and need advice on prerequisites.
Official standards
Training standards and award pathways are published by the UKCA at ukcanyoning.org.uk. Your provider confirms water conditions, kit and the exact programme when you book.
