Sharpen your off-road driving ability with this in-house 4x4 training course designed for those who want a full day of hands-on learning without formal assessment. Guided by a BORDA-trained instructor, you'll receive in-depth knowledge on vehicle setup and off-road driving techniques before putting it all into practice across varied terrain in a Land Rover Discovery TD5.
The day begins with a comprehensive classroom session lasting 1–2 hours. During this time, your instructor will break down the principles of 4x4 systems, including differential locks, tyre pressure management, gear selection, and the importance of correct vehicle preparation. This section also includes discussion of safety and terrain management specific to UK off-road environments such as mud, wet grass, and gravel tracks.
Following a short lunch break, you'll spend the remainder of the day driving on our private 40-acre off-road course in a Land Rover Discovery TD5. Under expert supervision, you'll practise navigating through woodland paths, modest climbs and descents, side slopes, and uneven ground. Instruction is tailored to your experience level, so whether you're new to 4x4 or refreshing your skills, expect plenty of coaching and seat time. Although the course is not certificated, it follows the same technical format as formal training options, making it a cost-effective alternative.
Based near the village of Farnsfield in Nottinghamshire, the training takes place on a purpose-built 40-acre site just off the A617 towards Newark. The course includes woodland trails, moderate gradients, loose surfaces, and mixed terrain typical of British off-road conditions. This gives participants a realistic and safe environment to apply their skills.
You’ll find the site entrance around 200 yards from the A614 roundabout, on the left side of the road. The postcode NG22 8BP gets you close, but be aware that sat navs may mislead slightly—follow signage once nearby for best results.
All participants must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid UK driving licence. No previous off-road experience is required, making this course suitable for beginners or anyone wanting to refresh their skills before tackling more challenging terrain. Participants should wear sturdy footwear and bring clothing suitable for outdoor conditions. Lunch and refreshments are not included, so please bring your own.
This in-house 4x4 training course has been developed to offer a full, professional experience without the pressure of formal assessment. Delivered by a BORDA-trained instructor, it follows the same core structure and content as certified courses but focuses entirely on hands-on learning and practical development. You'll benefit from a full day of tailored coaching, using tried-and-tested teaching methods across terrain features designed to reflect real off-road challenges found in the UK.
What sets this course apart is the flexibility it offers. Whether you're completely new to off-road driving or want to refresh and refine your skills in a more relaxed setting, the instructor will adapt the session to suit your pace and confidence. Because the day is not tied to certification criteria, there's more room to explore different driving styles, ask questions, and revisit sections as needed. For individuals or small groups looking to gain real-world ability in a supportive environment, this is an ideal option.
Yes, there is free parking available at the meeting point on Kirklington Road, near Farnsfield. We’re located just off the A617 heading towards Newark—200 yards from the A614 roundabout. Once you’re nearby, look out for signage and our team.
Please note that sat navs don’t always take you to the exact entrance, so it’s a good idea to double-check the directions beforehand. We suggest allowing a bit of extra time to ensure you arrive on schedule and don’t miss any of your session time.
This in-house course follows the same teaching structure and content as a BORDA-certified session but does not include formal assessment or certification. It’s ideal for individuals who want to build or refresh their off-road driving skills without needing an official qualification, making it more accessible and less time-constrained.
While it doesn’t result in a formal certificate, it’s still led by a BORDA-trained instructor and includes the same key elements—vehicle preparation, classroom theory, and extensive practical driving. It’s particularly useful for personal development, confidence-building, and preparation ahead of more advanced training.
No prior off-road experience is required. The course is designed to accommodate complete beginners as well as drivers who may already have some on-road or light off-road experience but want to deepen their understanding. The instructor will tailor the level of challenge and instruction based on your ability and confidence.
If you already have some experience, the course still offers value through technical guidance, correction of bad habits, and direct instruction on terrains or situations you may not have faced before. The flexible format makes it suitable for a wide range of participants.
You’ll be using a private 40-acre off-road course featuring a wide variety of real-world terrain. This includes woodland paths, moderate inclines and declines, muddy sections, water crossings (weather permitting), rutted tracks, and uneven surfaces. The site has been designed to simulate typical UK off-road conditions in a safe and controlled environment.
These features give participants the opportunity to experience how a 4x4 behaves in different scenarios and to learn how to handle the vehicle effectively using proper techniques. Each section is introduced gradually and supported by expert coaching.
This course includes use of a Land Rover Discovery TD5 that’s been specially equipped for off-road training. However, if you have your own 4x4 and would prefer to use it, this may be possible by prior arrangement—your vehicle must be roadworthy, insured, and suitable for off-road use.
Using the provided vehicle allows you to focus entirely on learning without worrying about the risk of damage to your own car. It’s also helpful if you’re unsure whether your personal vehicle is up to the task or lacks off-road features like low-range gearing.
You’ll need to bring your full UK driving licence, as it’s a legal requirement for this course. Dress appropriately for the outdoors—this includes waterproof outer layers, warm clothing in cooler months, and supportive footwear with good grip. Gloves are optional but can be useful for grip and comfort.
You’ll also need to bring a packed lunch and drinks, as food is not provided and the site is not located near any shops or cafés. It’s also a good idea to bring a notebook if you’d like to take notes during the classroom session, especially for remembering key safety tips and techniques.
