This is a three-day outdoor course built around consecutive full mountain days, not classroom theory. You meet first in Capel Curig for introductions, goals, and kit checks, then move into quieter North Wales hills chosen so you can practise without crowds. Each morning starts with a short briefing on the forecast and the learning focus for the day, then you spend the bulk of your time relocating on the map, choosing lines, and moving with purpose over rough ground.
Day one lays foundations: simple relocating, contour reading, and how the ground should match the map. Weather discussion begins early so planning becomes part of every decision, not an afterthought. Day two builds density: denser navigation legs, hiking movement on steeper ground, and a taste of light scrambling where suitable, with river-crossing strategies and clothing or footwear appraisal woven into the day. GPS and altimeter use may be discussed as aids while traditional map and compass skills stay central.
Day three consolidates everything on a fuller mountain day with more independent planning. Themes for multi-day hiking, wild camping food and nutrition, and walking poles may appear when they help the group. You finish with a clear debrief and practical next steps for your own hill days in North Wales and beyond, so the skills stick under realistic mountain fatigue rather than only on short practice loops.
Courses are led by qualified mountaineers who teach on the hill rather than in a classroom. Ratios stay at a maximum of six clients to one instructor so navigation and movement coaching stays personal, with time to correct habits before they become hard to unlearn.
Teaching is practical and condition-led across quieter North Wales ground. You get clear kit guidance in advance, honest feedback during the days, and a course shape that builds from foundations to consolidation so you leave better prepared for longer independent hill trips.
Meet in Capel Curig for introductions, goals, and kit checks, then head into quieter hills to start map and compass work. Early coaching covers relocating, simple route choice, and how to read the ground against the map.

Meet initially in Capel Curig. Exact pin and time are confirmed in your joining instructions, with venues then chosen across quieter North Wales hills for the skills focus.
Base yourself nearby and allow extra time for parking and changeable mountain weather on cold or wet mornings throughout the course.
This course suits adults who already have some hill or mountain hiking experience and want structured coaching on navigation, movement, and decision making. All abilities can be tailored, including prep for altitude treks, but prior days on foot help you get the most from the teaching.

Bring weather-ready clothing and footwear, a packed lunch and drinks, hill kit, OS map OL17, a compass such as a Silva Type 4 or 54, and a pen or pencil with a notebook for notes.
Sturdy boots and waterproofs matter more than brand names; follow any extra kit notes in your joining instructions.

Book flexible lodging for three nights so early starts stay realistic if venues shift with the forecast.
You need fitness for consecutive full mountain days with hiking, navigation practice, and some light scrambling. The pace is instructional, but cumulative fatigue across three days is real.
Prior summer hill days are the best preparation before adding denser navigation and route-choice coaching.
Instructors choose quieter venues from the forecast each morning and may adapt the plan if conditions deteriorate. Teaching still aims to cover core skills outdoors whenever it is safe to do so.
The team will be in touch if a day needs to change for safety reasons. Personal travel insurance is recommended.
Food is not included. Bring packed lunches, snacks, and drinks for every mountain day so you stay fuelled while practising skills on the move.
Evening meals are your own arrangement in local villages after each day.
Maximum ratio is six clients to one instructor so coaching stays personal on navigation, scrambling, and river-crossing practice. Smaller groups also keep movement safer on rougher ground.
Live availability shows how many spaces remain on your date.
Transport to daily meeting points is not included. You need your own vehicle or arrangements to reach Capel Curig and any follow-on venues each morning.
Budget for parking where required, and share cars within your party when that simplifies early starts across the course.
