What to Expect
Over the course of two days, you'll embark on a journey to master the art of mountain navigation amidst the stunning landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. This hands-on experience is perfect for anyone looking to build their confidence in navigating through diverse and challenging mountainous terrain.
You’ll start with the basics, learning essential navigation skills, such as reading maps, using a compass, and understanding the terrain. But our course goes beyond just navigation. You'll also learn what essentials to pack for your mountain adventures, ensuring you're always prepared, no matter the conditions.
Each day of the course is designed to be an integral part of a mountainous journey, where you’ll immediately apply your newfound skills in a real-world setting. Along the way, our experienced guides will provide support, insight, and plenty of opportunities to practice in a variety of environments.
Locations
This course takes place in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, providing a perfect setting for learning and adventure. You’ll explore different mountainous terrains, with each location chosen to enhance your learning experience. From the rugged landscapes of Glen Coe to the iconic peaks surrounding Fort William, every step is a lesson in understanding and mastering the mountains.
We will meet on the first day at Braveheart Car Park in Fort William. We will agree a meeting point for day two at the end of the first day - we like to get you involved in deciding the location!
Prerequisites
- Minimum of 13 years old, with children required to be accompanied by an adult.
- A moderate level of fitness is recommended, as the course involves continuous movement through mountainous terrain.
What to Bring
Participants must bring the following items:
- Walking shoes or boots (no trainers, flip-flops, or inappropriate footwear)
- 25 to 45-litre backpack
- 1-litre water bottle
- Sun cream
- Waterproof clothing
- Spare layers, such as a warm jacket
- Lunch for each day, plus snacks to keep you energised
