Thorong La at 5,416 metres is the high point of this 16-day anticlockwise circuit from Kathmandu, with a rest day in Manang and a temple night at Muktinath. Groups stay between 1 and 5 people from age 16. A local bus takes you to Nadi, the Jomsom to Pokhara flight is included after the pass, and a tourist bus brings you home.
Your guide meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and takes you to a Kathmandu hotel. The next day is for permits and preparation. Then you'll take a local bus seven to eight hours to Nadi and start walking the Marshyangdi through Gurung fields to Jagat, past waterfalls to Dharapani, through pine and oak to Chame, and on through fir forest to Pisang.
You'll climb a ridge into Manang at 3,351 metres and spend a rest day walking to chortens and monasteries so your body can settle. From there you climb through yak pasture to Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi. An early start crosses Thorong La at 5,416 metres. From the pass you look at snow peaks above and the Kali Gandaki and Mustang hills below, then descend to Muktinath.
A two-hour jeep takes you to Jomsom. You'll fly to Pokhara, have a day by the lake, and take the tourist bus home to Kathmandu. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included from the Nadi bus day through Jomsom. Groups stay at five or fewer. Sleeping bags and down jackets can be issued in Kathmandu if you ask. The pass morning starts early, and the guide will wait if wind or snow closes Thorong La.
Marshyangdi villages give the first week its character: Hindu and Gurung fields at Nadi and Jagat, waterfalls toward Dharapani, pine and oak into Chame, then fir forest to Pisang. The valley dries as you climb into Manang, a Tibetan-influenced village of chortens and monasteries at 3,351 metres.
Thorong La is the 5,416-metre saddle onto the Kali Gandaki side, with Muktinath the temple village on the descent and Jomsom the airfield for the Pokhara flight. Kathmandu is the hotel city at each end. You start and finish at Tribhuvan International Airport unless you are already in a city hotel.
Full walking days should already feel normal, and you should be happy sleeping above 3,000 metres. Thorong La is 5,416 metres. The Manang rest day is part of the plan, not an optional extra.
The minimum age is 16. Groups stay at 5 or fewer. Bring a passport and broken-in boots. Tell us about any heart or lung condition before you come. Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi are cold at night.
Pass mornings need an early start and a guide who will wait if wind or snow closes Thorong La. Permits, lodge beds, the listed meals, the two-hour jeep to Jomsom, the Jomsom to Pokhara flight, and the tourist-bus seats are arranged before you leave Kathmandu, with an English-speaking guide from the airport through the pass.
Small groups of 1 to 5 keep the climb to Thorong Phedi from turning into a queue. The same Kathmandu desk that books the air ticket will hold you at Yak Kharka or Thorong Phedi when the saddle is unsafe, and will watch valley wind on the Jomsom morning rather than push a flight the crew will not accept.
