Climbers who already have the basics down often plateau without focused coaching, and that is exactly what this course is built to fix. Sessions run indoors or outdoors from Frome across the South West, tailored to whichever discipline you want to sharpen, whether that is sport, trad or bouldering.
Coaching starts with a short conversation about what you want to work on, then moves straight into practical time on the rock or wall. Shorter sessions focus on one or two specific goals, while the 1 day and 2 day courses build in time for lead climbing practice, trad placements and multi pitch decision making.
A typical structure is set out step by step below, though the balance always shifts to match your goals and how the session is going.
Sessions are based around Frome in Somerset, with quick access to well regarded outdoor venues across the South West, including Cheddar Gorge and Portland. Indoor climbing walls are used when the forecast is against you or when a specific discipline is better practised on plastic first.
The variety of rock types across Somerset and Dorset means there is always a venue suited to whatever you are working on, from delicate limestone footwork to bolder sport routes.
This course suits climbers who already have some outdoor or indoor experience under their belt, such as basic belaying and tying into a harness. If you are completely new to climbing, the Introduction to Rock Climbing course is a better starting point, and it is easy to move between the two.
Coaching comes from a qualified Rock Climbing Instructor working towards Mountain Leader and Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor qualifications, so the guidance is grounded in genuine mountain experience rather than a script. Sessions stay private, which keeps feedback specific to you rather than shared across a bigger group.
Past clients regularly mention returning for a second or third session, a sign that the coaching style and pace genuinely helps people progress rather than just repeating a standard format.
This course is designed for climbers who already have some experience, such as basic belaying, tying into a harness and moving comfortably on easier routes. It picks up where a beginner course leaves off.
If you are unsure whether your experience is a good fit, get in touch beforehand and describe your background so the session can be planned accurately.
Yes, coaching can focus on sport climbing, trad climbing, bouldering or a mix, depending on what you want to develop. Just mention your priorities when arranging your session.
Many climbers use the time to work on a specific weakness, such as footwork, lead confidence or reading a route, rather than a general overview.
The 2 hour session suits a focused block of coaching on one particular skill, while the half day gives room to combine technique work with some rope systems practice.
The 1 day and 2 day courses allow proper time for lead climbing, trad placements and multi pitch decision making, which need more than a couple of hours to build genuine confidence.
All technical kit is included in the price, including ropes, harnesses, belay devices and quickdraws, so there is nothing extra to buy before booking.
If you have your own gear you would like to get more familiar with, bring it along and your instructor can factor it into the session.
Yes, sessions can run entirely outdoors, entirely indoors, or as a mix depending on what suits your goals and the weather on the day. Indoor sessions work well for technical drills before applying them outside.
If you mainly climb indoors and want to build confidence transitioning outdoors, that transition is exactly what this course is designed to support.
The course is designed for 1 to 2 people, so you are welcome to bring a partner, friend or family member with a similar level of experience.
Coaching still stays personal at this size, with feedback tailored to both climbers rather than a one size fits all approach.
The introduction course covers the fundamentals for people with little or no outdoor climbing experience, such as harness fitting and basic belaying.
This course assumes those basics are already in place and focuses instead on refining technique, building lead confidence and developing more advanced rope skills.
If conditions are not safe or suitable for the planned venue, the session can move indoors or be rescheduled to a more suitable day.
Your instructor will keep an eye on the forecast in the run up to your booking and get in touch as early as possible if any changes are needed.
Yes, every session ends with a review of what was covered and clear pointers on what to focus on next, whether that is a specific movement pattern or a wider goal such as leading outdoors.
Many climbers find this progress plan just as useful as the session itself, since it gives direction for independent practice afterwards.
After booking, you will be contacted to arrange a date, venue and indoor or outdoor preference that fits your availability and goals for the session.
This gives you the chance to talk through what you want to focus on before the day itself, so the coaching can be planned around your priorities.
