BSAC Sports Diver is where recreational UK diving opens up properly. You are no longer capped at 20 or 30 metres on no-decompression profiles alone. After training and depth progression dives in five-metre steps, you can reach 40 metres, plan dives that need in-water decompression, and handle emergencies with the rescue skills BSAC embeds at this grade.
There are two routes in. Ocean Diver to Sports Diver is the longer syllabus with six theory modules, rescue training and six open-water dives. Advanced Ocean Diver to Sports Diver is shorter if you already have 30 m experience and two Sports Diver theory modules banked.
Most divers describe Sports Diver as the grade that matches how they actually want to dive in Britain: wrecks in the thirties, longer bottom times on nitrox, and enough rescue training that you are useful when a buddy is tired or stressed. The theory exam is short. The pool rescue day is wet, physical and worth every minute. That is the point.
Sports Diver timing depends which route you take and whether you train with a club or centre.
Club programmes run over months. Centre intensives compress wet days into a block. Rescue sessions run long; bring food and warm layers.
Sports Diver uses continuous practical assessment in confined and open water, with a short theory exam after classroom or eLearning modules. Your instructor signs off skills when you perform them reliably.

Find activitiesIt is BSAC's intermediate diver grade. You gain rescue skills, nitrox to 36%, and depth progression to 40 m with permission for in-water decompression dives after qualification.
Many UK wreck divers stop at Sports Diver because it covers how they actually dive in British seas.
Ocean Diver or Advanced Ocean Diver, or equivalent from PADI, SSI or another recognised agency.
Leave a comment when you book with your certification and recent dive count so the centre can confirm which Sports Diver route applies.
If you hold Advanced Ocean Diver with 30 m experience, the shorter Advanced Ocean Diver to Sports Diver syllabus saves duplicate theory. Ocean Diver holders take the full six-module route.
Your instructor advises based on logged dives and which Sports Diver theory you have already completed.
Clubs spread training over a season. Centres may run intensive blocks over several weekends or a holiday week.
Depth progression dives after the course add calendar time — budget extra weekends for 35 m and 40 m sign-offs.
BSAC integrates rescue training into Sports Diver rather than offering it as a separate course. You also gain deeper diving and decompression privileges Rescue Diver does not include on its own.
PADI Rescue Diver remains a useful cross-reference if you hold both agencies' cards and want to compare scope.
After completing Sports Diver training and depth progression dives in 5 m increments. You must be 14 or older for depths beyond 20 m post-qualification.
Rushing progression annoys instructors and risks injury. Build comfort at 30 m before asking for 40 m sign-off.
Sports Diver qualifies you to complete dives requiring in-water decompression within BSAC limits after training. Accelerated deco with stage cylinders is a separate Accelerated Decompression Procedures course.
Deco adds planning obligation. Treat mandatory stops as non-negotiable, not suggestions.
More demanding than Ocean Diver pool sessions. Expect long wet days, repeated tows and scenarios that feel stressful on purpose — controlled training, not real emergencies.
Reasonable fitness for lifting and towing in the water helps. Tell your instructor early if you have shoulder or back concerns.

Many Sports Divers simply dive wrecks and reefs for years without another card. That is a valid outcome.
Your own kit if you have it, plus DSMB, reel and dive computer suited to nitrox and decompression planning. Centres may rent for training dives.
Rescue days involve constant in-and-out of the water. Warm layers and snacks matter more than on fun dives.
