Hill and Moorland Leader qualifies you to lead day walks on open upland moor, fell and hill ground that stops short of full mountain terrain. Think Dartmoor mist, Peak District edges and Cheviot grass rather than Snowdon scrambling or winter ridges. Mountain Training designed it for instructors, teachers and guides who manage groups where weather turns quickly and paths disappear into bog.
Registration requires 18+, a year of personal hill walking, BMC or equivalent membership and twenty quality hill days in DLOG. Training runs three days; assessment another three after you log forty quality hill days in at least three upland areas. Sixteen-hour outdoor first aid must be current and completed in person.
Assessment feels like a hard week at work with an assessor watching your navigation and group calls. Night legs and emergency scenarios are common. Partial reassessment exists if one element slips. Many candidates arrive via Silver Navigator Award navigation confidence before they commit to the logbook grind.
