What is the NNAS?
The National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) provides a progressive framework for map and compass skills in British countryside and upland terrain. Tutors deliver practical courses outdoors, with assessment based on demonstrated navigation rather than written exams.
Awards progress from Bronze through Silver to Gold, building route planning, contour interpretation, compass bearings and relocation skills. Silver level suits walkers who already navigate paths confidently and want to cross open country and poor visibility with greater independence.

Choosing a course
Silver National Navigation Award expects solid Bronze-level skills and comfort walking off clear paths. If you rarely use a compass or have not completed Bronze, book a Bronze course first or ask the provider about a skills check day.
Courses run as hill days in real terrain, so fitness and hill kit matter. Check whether compass and map are supplied, course length and minimum group size. Leave a comment when you book if you need the award for DofE, Mountain Training registration or employer requirements.
Official standards
Award standards and tutor accreditation are published by the NNAS at nnas.org.uk. Your tutor confirms the level, terrain and assessment approach when you book on adventuro.
