What is the ILS?
The International Life Saving Federation (ILS) is the world authority for drowning prevention, lifesaving sport and common standards for water rescue education. National bodies such as RLSS UK and Surf Life Saving GB align programmes with ILS guidance so that lifesaving skills transfer across borders.
ILS does not typically issue recreational adventure qualifications directly to the public in the UK. Instead, its frameworks underpin beach lifeguard, pool lifeguard and surf coach safety awards delivered by national federations and training agencies.

Choosing a course
Book through the relevant national pathway for your role: beach lifeguarding via SLSGB or RLSS awards, surf coaching safety via ISA-linked programmes, or modular water safety via RLSS NWSMP. Leave a comment when you book if you need ILS-recognised credentials for overseas employment.
Swim fitness tests, renewal periods and employer acceptance vary by award. Compare course length, environment (pool, beach, river) and whether assessment is integrated or separate.
Official standards
Global education standards and federation membership are published by the International Life Saving Federation at ilsweb.org. This overview is a guide for booking on adventuro. Your training provider confirms which national award applies and ILS alignment when you book.
