Marlborough runs from the Interislander berth at Picton to the sauvignon blanc vines of Blenheim on the Wairau Plain. The Marlborough Sounds are drowned river valleys where bush-clad ridges drop into deep green water and dolphins sometimes follow boat wakes in the outer arms.
The Queen Charlotte Track skirts those ridges for roughly seventy kilometres, with lodges and camps above coves and water taxis shifting bikes and bags between stages. Havelock, the green-lipped mussel capital, sits at the head of Pelorus Sound.
What to do in Marlborough
Day boats cruise into the Sounds from Picton or Havelock, while multi-day walkers and cyclists stage the Queen Charlotte with hut or lodge nights. Water taxis move bags so you can walk with a day pack only. Flat vineyard roads around Blenheim suit afternoon cycling between cellar doors. Tie Marlborough to Nelson, Marlborough and Tasman with a ferry arrival and a night in Picton before you head west to Abel Tasman.
