The Lake District is the heartland of British wild swimming. Cumbria's lakes and high tarns hold some of the cleanest, most scenic fresh water in England, and the tradition of swimming in them runs deep. Whether it's a sunrise dip in Derwentwater, a long swim across Buttermere with the fells reflected in the surface, or a walk up to a remote tarn for a swim no one else will share that day, the Lakes offers wild swimming of a quality and variety that is hard to match.
Lakes and tarns
The major lakes — Buttermere, Crummock Water, Derwentwater, Coniston, Ullswater — each have their own character and their best entry points, which local guides know intimately. The high tarns are a different experience again: cold, clear and quiet, reached by a fellside walk that becomes part of the adventure. Many guides run "swim-hike" sessions that combine a walk into the fells with a swim at a tarn or quiet lakeshore.
Cold water, done safely
Cold-water swimming carries real risks — cold shock, after-drop and currents — which is why a guided introduction is so valuable. Several Cumbrian guides hold open-water coaching and safety qualifications, and some bring a therapeutic or wellbeing focus to their sessions, using the water for more than just exercise. Going with a qualified guide is the safest way to build confidence in cold water.
