Italy's spectacular coastline and warm, clear Mediterranean water make it a wonderful place to swim wild. The Amalfi and Sorrento coasts, with their cliffs, grottoes and hidden coves, offer some of the most dramatic boat-access swimming anywhere, while the islands and the Salento coast add clear, turquoise water in sheltered bays. Much of the best swimming is reached by boat, dropping into deep, clear water beneath the cliffs far from the busy beaches.
Coves and grottoes
The Amalfi and Sorrento coasts are the headline: sea caves, grottoes and cliff-backed coves where you can swim in deep, clear water with the famous coastline rising above you. The islands (the Egadi off Sicily, and others) add more transparent, sheltered swimming. Boat operators build swim stops into their coastal trips, choosing calm, clear spots on the day.
Boat trips and guided swims
Most of Italy's wild swimming happens on boat excursions along these coasts, with the warm summer water and sheltered coves making it accessible and safe.
