Wales is Britain's mountain biking heartland. Coed-y-Brenin in mid-Wales was one of the first purpose-built trail networks in the country, and Bike Park Wales near Merthyr Tydfil is now the most visited uplift-access bike park in Britain. In between are the Afan Trails, Cwmcarn, Glyndŵr's Way and hundreds of kilometres of natural singletrack through sheep-grazed upland. The riding is technical by UK standards — consistent rainfall means trails are well-watered and roots are polished exactly when you're trying to corner hard.
Bike Park Wales
Located on the hillside above Merthyr Tydfil, Bike Park Wales is a proper bike park with chair lift, 40+ trails from green to black, a skills academy and a café you will visit after every run. The terrain ranges from flowing beginner trails to double-black DH tracks that have hosted national enduro series rounds. It's the obvious starting point for a Welsh MTB trip if you want uplift and variety in one location.
Coed-y-Brenin and the forest parks
Coed-y-Brenin — the Forest of Kings — in Snowdonia National Park has been developing trails since the 1990s and now runs from green family routes to technical red and black singletrack with significant exposure and loose rock. Afan Forest Park and Cwmcarn add to this with their own trail networks. Afan's trails run through narrow river valleys; Cwmcarn has one of the few trail-centre black descents in Wales with significant vertical drop.
Natural riding
Away from the trail centres, Wales has mountain riding across the Brecon Beacons, Cambrian Mountains and Snowdonia. Navigation skills and appropriate equipment matter more here; the terrain is rougher and conditions change faster. Guided rides are available and significantly extend what visitors can access safely — it's easy to get lost in the Cambrian uplands and considerably more difficult to get found.
When to go
Summer (June–August) for drier trails and longer days. Autumn produces excellent riding but more mud. Winter riding is popular but involves waterproofing most of your kit and accepting that Bike Park Wales access runs depend on the chair lift operating.
