North Wales is, by common consent, one of the best places to climb in Britain. Snowdonia contains an astonishing density of quality rock: the historic routes of the Llanberis Pass, the quick-drying crags of Tremadog, the vast slate quarries of Dinorwig, and the mountain cliffs of Cloggy and the Glyderau. Add the scrambling ridges of Snowdon and Tryfan and the nearby sea cliffs, and you have a region where a climber could spend a lifetime and never run out of new ground. For learners and improvers, the concentration of top-level instructors makes it an ideal place to develop.
Mountain crags and slate
The Llanberis Pass is a living museum of British climbing, packed with classic routes across the grades. Tremadog's south-facing rhyolite dries fast and offers excellent single-pitch climbing for all levels. The slate quarries provide a uniquely atmospheric, technical experience on polished blue-grey walls. For those moving from hillwalking, the scrambles on Tryfan and Crib Goch are a natural progression towards roped climbing.
