40+ Exciting Things to Do in Newquay, Cornwall
Discover the thrill of outdoor adventures in Newquay, Cornwall’s premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts that promises unforgettable experiences.

South West England is Adventuro's busiest adventure region — Cornwall, Devon and the Jurassic Coast. Surf Atlantic breaks, coasteer and sea-kayak the cliffs, hike the moors, and learn to sail or powerboat, with hundreds of courses and expert local centres.
The South West has one of the most varied climbing landscapes in England, and it's chronically underrated outside climbing circles. Dartmoor's granite tors, Cornwall's Atlantic sea cliffs and Somerset's Cheddar Gorge each offer a completely different experience — different rock types, different approaches, different atmospheres. Whether you want a gentle introduction on a sunny Dartmoor tor or a proper sea cliff adventure at Bosigran, the South West delivers.
Dartmoor is the most accessible climbing venue for most visitors to Devon. Hundreds of granite tors are scattered across the moor, from the roadside bouldering at Haytor to the longer, more committing routes on Dewerstone's south face above the Plym gorge. The granite is honest — rough, grippy and unsentimental about technique. Cornwall's sea cliffs are a different proposition entirely. Bosigran on the Penwith Peninsula is one of Britain's finest sea cliff venues, with routes of all grades above the Atlantic; Chair Ladder and Sennen Cove complete a trio of world-class venues within a short drive of Land's End. The rock is good, the situation dramatic and the midges absent. Cheddar Gorge in Somerset has towering limestone walls up to 120 metres and a history of hard climbing — it's an intimidating venue that's better with a guide the first time. Further east, Berry Head near Brixham in Devon has accessible limestone and a less serious atmosphere, well suited to beginners and family groups.
Most introductory climbing courses in the South West run as half or full days on a sheltered crag with straightforward access. You'll cover how to put on a harness, tying in, belaying your partner and basic movement on rock. By the end of a good full-day course, most people have seconded their instructor on several routes and understand the fundamental principles well enough to make sense of further progression. Equipment is provided — ropes, harness, helmet and rock shoes. Instructors hold Mountain Training qualifications.
After a beginner course, the useful next steps are a lead climbing course (learning to place your own protection and manage the consequences of a fall) or guided days on progressively more committing terrain. Cornwall's sea cliffs are particularly well suited to this — the routes are long enough to be satisfying and varied enough to develop a proper range of skills. Multi-pitch climbing — linking several rope lengths to reach a summit or top-out point — is available with experienced guides and opens up the best of Dartmoor and the Cornish coast.
Indoor walls in Exeter, Plymouth and Truro provide a controlled environment for technique work between outdoor days. Several instructors offer combined programmes — indoor sessions for developing specific skills, outdoor days for applying them on real rock. This tends to be the fastest route to competence, particularly if you're fitting climbing into a busy schedule rather than spending weeks at a time outdoors.
