The west is where Puerto Rico's winter swell lands. Rincón, Aguadilla and Isabela share that north-facing water. Cabo Rojo is the limestone corner with cliffs and salt flats. This is a drive from San Juan, not a day trip you add after El Yunque. Mona Island sits offshore and is a specialist outing, not a Tuesday snorkel.
Surf, then the days the swell drops
Rincón & Porta del Sol is the surfing week. Winter north swell is the product. Summer is smaller and friendlier if you're learning. When the ocean is too big for beginners, shops move people, or you sit it out. Northwest scuba and snorkelling work on the calmer days, not on the same morning as a solid overhead swell.
Getting here
Most people fly into SJU and drive. Aguadilla (BQN) is closer if your flight exists. San Juan rush hour on the way out will eat the afternoon. Stay on this coast if surf is why you came. Open the Book here tab for live lessons and dive days. Swell windows matter more than the calendar month.
