The east is the wild corner: Sutjeska National Park, Maglić on the Montenegro border, Perućica forest, and the Tara canyon from Foča. Distances from Sarajevo look modest until you hit canyon roads. This is a full day in the park, not a casual add-on after breakfast in Baščaršija. Sutjeska and Maglić is the hiking block. Foča and Tara is the river block.
Maglić, Perućica and Tara water
Maglić is Bosnia's high point. Snow can linger into June. Perućica is old forest with rules, not a free wander. Hiking here is a proper mountain day. Tara rafting from Foča is bigger water than a late-summer Una park run. High water after melt is a different grade to October flows.
Stay in the east
Sleep near the park or in Foča. A same-day return from Sarajevo only works for a short walk, and even then you'll spend it in the car. Combining hiking and Tara rafting is the point of this region. Combining with Prenj in the same 48 hours is greedy.
