It's a boat-in site with walks around the temples. The adventure is the river as much as the ruins. Wear shoes that can get muddy and expect hours on the water.

Should I stay in Orange Walk or go as a day trip?

A day trip from the cayes or Belize City is long. Overnight in Orange Walk if Lamanai is a focus. Don't stack it after a dawn reef boat.

Is Corozal a reef destination?

No. It's bay and border mainland. For Barrier Reef walls, stay in Belize District or the south.

When is the north pleasant?

The dry season is easier on roads and mosquitoes. The river still runs in the wet. Boats cancel in hard weather either way.

Things to do in Northern Rivers & Maya Sites

The northern mainland is slower than the cayes: sugar towns, the New River, and Maya sites you reach by boat. Orange Walk is Lamanai. Corozal is Chetumal Bay and the Mexican border. You won't find Ambergris dive density here. You will find lagoon wildlife and a quieter night.
