June to September is the main season for the high valleys, when the roads to the lakes and passes are open. May and October are quieter and good for lower walks, with cool nights and clear air. In winter the upper valleys close with snow, though a ski resort in Swat opens and the lower hill stations turn white.
Swat is the easiest to reach and has the widest choice of hotels, with forest walks and alpine lakes at the head of the valley. The Kaghan valley is the classic summer road trip, with lakes along the way and the Babusar Pass at the top. Chitral takes longer to reach, and in return you get bigger mountains, fewer crowds and the Kalash valleys.
Yes, in summer. The Kaghan valley road crosses the Babusar Pass to Chilas on the Karakoram Highway, and from there Hunza is most of a day's drive north. From Chitral, the Shandur Pass road runs east to Gilgit. Both routes are usually open from about June to September, and a combined trip fits well into two to three weeks.
Yes, on guided trips. The Kunhar is cold and fast with snowmelt, so guides pick the section to match the day's flow and give you a helmet, buoyancy aid and a safety briefing before you launch. Water levels change through the summer, and some days are too high to run. You don't need experience, but you should be comfortable in cold water.
