Set sail across one of the Indian Ocean’s most beautiful and lesser-travelled routes, from the bustling backstreets of Zanzibar to the emerald peaks of the Seychelles. This trip combines remote island anchorages, open-water sailing, and laid-back days at sea. Whether you’re keen to build miles, refine your skills, or just unplug, this experience blends adventure with space to enjoy the ride.
You’ll begin in Stone Town, Zanzibar, where time seems to slow between the scent of cloves and the calls to prayer. There's time to wander the markets, visit the home of Freddie Mercury, or simply enjoy a drink on the beach before boarding the boat. From here, we warm up with a short sail to Kibandiko (Prison Island), where giant Aldabra tortoises roam and the turquoise water is ideal for a swim. Another day brings us to Pemba Island with its coral-fringed anchorages and brilliant snorkelling straight off the deck.
Then comes the blue-water stretch. As we leave Tanzanian waters, the adventure kicks up a notch. The wind fills the sails and we slip into a rotating watch system, sharing helm time, cooking, and stories under the stars. Expect long, open stretches of ocean, opportunities to fish for mahi-mahi or tuna, and the odd pod of dolphins joining us along the way. The sea state can vary – sometimes glassy, sometimes lumpy – but the rhythm of life on board keeps things steady. If weather permits, we may stop at remote islands like Bird or Silhouette before making landfall in Victoria on Mahé. It’s the sort of passage that stays with you long after the sails are down.
Your journey kicks off in Stone Town, the historic capital of Zanzibar. A maze of narrow alleys, spice stalls, and carved wooden doors, it’s the perfect place to soak in the rich history and grab last-minute bits before heading offshore. With warm weather and a laid-back feel, it’s an easy place to settle into holiday mode.
Your final destination is Victoria, Mahé, the compact capital of the Seychelles. Depending on weather and sea conditions, you may get the chance to stop at a few of the lesser-visited islands like Denis or Bird Island, each offering white sand beaches, forest walks, and excellent snorkelling. It’s a fitting finish to a rewarding offshore trip – remote, natural, and full of that slow island pace.
Life on board Synergy, our 40ft Fontaine Pajot Lavessi catamaran, is designed to be both relaxed and sociable. She’s spacious with wide walkways, a shaded cockpit for shared meals, and a large foredeck perfect for lounging, spotting marine life, or casting a fishing line. Equipped for offshore sailing but set up with comfort in mind, she’s a great mix of performance and liveability. You’ll have plenty of chances to help with the sailing, or just stretch out and enjoy the views with a cold drink in hand.
You’ll be staying in one of three guest cabins, which can be set up as a double or two singles using lee cloths. Each hull has its own bathroom shared between two cabins, and all bedding is provided. There’s room to store your gear, and the layout offers enough privacy for downtime between watches or after a day of hands-on sailing. Whether it’s a peaceful morning coffee or a shared sundowner, the boat feels like a proper home during your time at sea.
No prior sailing experience is needed – just a willingness to get involved and a sense of adventure. We’ll ask you ahead of time about any sailing you’ve done, and what you’d like to get out of the trip. Some guests come to relax and unwind, others want to build miles or prep for future qualifications. There’s room for both, and we’ll tailor things to suit.
Once we start the ocean crossing, we operate a watch system, which means everyone will get a taste of night sailing and the satisfaction of handling the boat across long distances. You’ll be part of a small team and can take on as much or as little as you like. This isn’t a luxury cruise – it’s a hands-on, team-based experience – but it’s also welcoming, sociable, and well-supported by a professional crew who love what they do.
The centre is led by experienced offshore skippers who are not just excellent sailors, but great at creating a friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere on board. Whether you’re tying your first bowline or logging ocean miles toward your next RYA qualification, there’s plenty of space to grow, learn, or just enjoy the open water.
What really sets this trip apart is the balance: serious ocean sailing paired with warm, shallow anchorages; skill-building alongside lazy afternoons; remote islands with proper sailing legs in between. You’ll sail with a small, close-knit group and a crew who genuinely care about giving you a good time on and off the water.
No prior sailing experience is required to take part in this trip. The journey is designed to welcome all levels, from complete beginners to experienced sailors. The professional skipper and crew will guide you throughout, helping you learn the basics or refine existing skills. Whether you want to take an active role on deck or simply enjoy the voyage, the trip is flexible to suit your preferences.
For those with some sailing background, the longer ocean passages provide an excellent opportunity to build sea miles and gain offshore experience. You’ll be encouraged to get involved with watch keeping, helming, and sail handling if you wish, but there’s no pressure to take on anything you’re not comfortable with.
Accommodation is provided in shared double or twin cabins on the catamaran Synergy. The cabins are comfortable and well-ventilated, each with storage space and access to shared bathrooms and showers located in each hull. Bedding and linens are included, so you just need to bring your personal items and a sense of adventure.
Privacy is respected within the layout, and the communal areas such as the cockpit and foredeck offer plenty of space to relax, socialise, or enjoy some quiet time. Life on board combines practical offshore sailing needs with comfort to ensure a pleasant stay throughout the journey.
You’ll want to pack clothing suitable for warm tropical weather, including light layers, swimwear, and waterproof or windproof outerwear for cooler or windy conditions at sea. Deck shoes or trainers with non-marking soles are recommended for safety on deck. Don’t forget sun protection like a hat, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen.
A camera or smartphone is useful to capture the scenic islands and marine life. If you have a drone and plan to bring it, check in advance with the crew, as weather conditions and regulations may affect its use. Personal toiletries and medications should also be included, along with any items you require for comfort during the trip.
The trip involves some physical activity, but it is manageable for most people of average fitness. You’ll spend time on deck helping with sailing tasks such as hoisting sails, steering, or keeping watch during night passages. These activities are shared amongst the small group, with support and instruction provided by the skipper and crew.
There is also plenty of downtime to relax, snorkel, swim, or explore island stops. If you have any mobility issues or concerns about your fitness level, it’s best to discuss these beforehand so the crew can help accommodate your needs as much as possible.
The skipper constantly monitors weather conditions and plans the route to maximise safety and comfort. The Indian Ocean can present variable conditions, ranging from calm days to choppier seas. When the sea state is rough, the crew will adjust sailing plans to ensure the best possible experience without compromising safety.
If severe weather prevents sailing on certain days, alternative activities or sheltered anchorages may be arranged where possible. Flexibility is important on this type of trip, and guests are encouraged to embrace the unpredictability of ocean sailing as part of the adventure.
All meals and non-alcoholic drinks are included throughout the trip and prepared fresh on board. The menu is planned to provide nourishing and tasty food suited to life at sea, with a mix of local flavours and familiar options. Guests can expect breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, with meals often prepared as a shared activity.
Alcoholic drinks are not included but can usually be brought on board by guests if desired, subject to space and regulations. The crew will advise on this before departure, and local stops may offer opportunities to purchase drinks ashore.
The yacht is fully equipped with all required safety gear, including life jackets for all guests, emergency beacons, and communication equipment. The skipper is highly experienced and holds commercial offshore qualifications, ensuring the highest standards of safety and seamanship.
Guests receive a full safety briefing at the start of the trip, including instructions on life jacket use, emergency procedures, and basic seamanship. The small group size means everyone can be closely supported, and the crew is always available to answer questions or provide assistance.
Yes, guests are encouraged to participate in sailing activities to the extent they wish. Whether it’s helming, trimming sails, navigating, or learning ropework, there are plenty of opportunities to gain hands-on experience under expert guidance. The skipper tailors the involvement to each guest’s interest and ability.
For those who prefer a more relaxed approach, it’s perfectly fine to sit back and enjoy the ride. The crew ensures a friendly and inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable, whether hands-on or observing.
Amazing Experience! The Wavysail trip from Cape Town to St Helena was an amazing experience. Sailing day and night for 2,000 nautical miles was challenging but great fun. Wavy, the skipper was so experienced and I learned a lot about helming and general seamanship. And we all had a lot…
