Wilderness Walks & Woodland Nights: 5-Day Guided Hiking and Wild Camping Holiday on the Isle of Eigg

The walks cover a variety of terrain including coastal paths, rocky ridges, grassy hillsides, and forest tracks. Some routes are fairly gentle, while others involve hill climbs and sections with uneven footing—particularly the hike up An Sgùrr and the more remote trails near Grulin. Routes are chosen to offer contrast and interest, with plenty of breaks and scenic pauses built in.

While none of the walks are technical, participants should be prepared for a mix of surfaces and the occasional steep incline. Sturdy footwear is essential, and your guides will always brief the group on what to expect each day. If weather conditions change, routes may be adjusted to suit the group’s ability and safety.

Tents are already pitched when you arrive, saving you time and effort. The site is located in a woodland setting with space for up to 10 guests, plus communal areas including a bell tent lounge and hammocks for relaxing. Each guest will have a designated space within a shared or individual tent, depending on the group size and preferences.

You’ll need to bring your own sleeping bag, roll mat or camping mattress, and a pillow if desired. A headtorch, quick-drying towel, and dry bags for clothes are also recommended. There’s no need to bring cooking gear or stoves, as meals are prepared and served on site.

Yes, the meals provided are designed to be nutritious and satisfying, especially after a long day of walking. Breakfast and evening meals are cooked over an open fire in the woodland kitchen, while lunches are prepared daily by the Eigg tearoom and packed for your day out. The menu includes a mix of vegetarian and meat-based dishes.

Dietary requirements such as vegan, gluten-free, or allergy-specific needs can be accommodated with advance notice. It’s important to let the organisers know at the time of booking to ensure they can prepare appropriately. Snacks and additional personal food items are welcome if you’d like extras during the day.

The trip is open to participants aged 12 and over. Under 16s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian throughout the experience. While this is not specifically a family-focused trip, it is suitable for active families with older children who enjoy walking and being outdoors.

Each day is structured to include a mix of walking and relaxed time back at camp, so there’s a good balance for young participants who are comfortable hiking and camping. If you’re unsure whether it would suit your family, you’re encouraged to contact the organisers to chat through the details.

Facilities at the woodland campsite are simple and designed to fit with the off-grid environment. Toilets are provided and basic hand-washing facilities are available, but there are no permanent indoor bathrooms or showers on site. It’s a rustic setup suited to those comfortable with basic camping conditions. Hot showers are a short walk away at the pier facilities.

There are shared spaces like the bell tent lounge for downtime, and the dining gazebo is covered to provide shelter during meals. Hammocks are strung up around the site for relaxing, and the atmosphere is very communal and informal. Charging devices may not be possible, so portable power banks are useful if needed.

The Isle of Eigg’s weather can be changeable, even in summer. Rain, wind, sunshine, and cooler evenings are all possible within the same day. You should bring waterproofs, warm layers, a hat and gloves, and clothing you’re happy to get muddy or wet. Footwear should be waterproof and broken-in.

Your guides will keep an eye on the forecast and adjust plans accordingly to make sure you stay safe and comfortable. There are plenty of covered areas at the campsite to dry off and relax, and warm evening meals are a great way to recover from wetter walking days.

Yes, the optional activities such as paddleboarding, axe throwing and archery are open to beginners. Each session is led by an experienced guide or instructor who will provide all the necessary equipment and briefings. Paddleboarding sessions are typically calm and focused on enjoying the evening setting rather than distance or speed.

These activities are entirely optional and depend on weather and group interest. You’re welcome to opt out of any of them if you prefer to relax at camp instead. Just let your guide know what you’re comfortable with and they’ll ensure the activity suits your experience level.
