Stepping up to skipper level starts with solid theory and clear understanding of how to plan and manage a passage. This course gives you the knowledge needed to take charge of a yacht or motor cruiser in familiar waters by day. You can choose structured classroom learning or a flexible online format to suit your schedule.
Throughout the course, you’ll build a strong foundation in navigation and seamanship, starting with the basics and progressing into practical passage planning. Classroom sessions are structured and interactive, with plenty of time to work through chart exercises, ask questions and apply what you’ve learned with instructor support. If you choose the online route, the same material is delivered through guided modules, allowing you to learn at your own pace with support available when needed.
As your understanding develops, you’ll begin planning realistic coastal passages, factoring in tides, weather and navigation marks. You’ll also cover collision regulations, safety procedures and decision-making, helping you feel more confident taking responsibility on board. By the end, you’ll have the knowledge to plan and execute short trips and be well prepared for the Day Skipper Practical course.
Classroom courses are delivered in Southampton, with sessions running from Hamble Point Marina and Marchwood. These locations sit within easy reach of the Solent, one of the UK’s busiest and most varied boating areas, making them a fitting place to learn navigation that directly applies to real conditions.
For those studying online, you can complete the course from anywhere in the UK, with full access to materials and instructor support. If you later progress to practical training, the Solent provides an excellent environment to apply your knowledge, with tidal streams, navigation marks and varied traffic offering realistic experience.
No formal qualifications are required to join this course, making it suitable for beginners and those stepping up from crew roles. Having spent some time on the water can be helpful, but everything is explained clearly so you can build confidence as you go.
A basic interest in boating and navigation is all you need to get started. If you’re unsure whether this is the right level, guidance is available to help you choose the most suitable course for your experience.
Learning is delivered in a way that keeps things clear, practical and easy to apply, whether you’re sitting in a classroom or studying online. The focus is on helping you understand how navigation works in real situations, rather than just memorising theory, so you leave with knowledge you can actually use on the water.
With a background that includes offshore sailing, global passages and years of instruction, Rob brings real insight into how decisions are made at sea. His approach is supportive and straightforward, helping you build confidence step by step while keeping the course engaging and relevant to your goals.
No formal experience is required, and the course is designed to take you from basic understanding through to confident passage planning. Many people join with little or no navigation knowledge.
That said, having spent some time on a boat as crew can help you relate the theory to real situations. If you’re completely new, you’ll still be supported throughout and guided step by step.
Classroom learning offers face-to-face interaction, immediate feedback and the chance to ask questions as you go. It’s a structured environment that many people find helpful when learning new concepts.
Online study gives you flexibility, allowing you to learn at your own pace and revisit topics whenever needed. Both options cover the same syllabus and lead to the same certification.
The course can be delivered in several formats, including a full week, split across two weekends, or over evening sessions depending on availability.
You’ll need to check the booking form to see which dates run at which location, as schedules can vary between Hamble and Marchwood.
Most learners spend around 40 hours working through the material, but this can vary depending on your pace and availability.
You’ll have extended access to the course, allowing you to spread learning over weeks or months if needed, making it easy to fit around other commitments.
This course gives you the theory needed to skipper in familiar waters by day, but it’s typically combined with the Day Skipper Practical course to build hands-on experience.
Together, the theory and practical elements give you a well-rounded foundation to take charge of a vessel with confidence.
You’ll cover navigation, chartwork, tides, weather, passage planning, safety procedures and collision regulations. Each topic is explained with practical examples to help you understand how it applies on the water.
By the end, you’ll be able to plan routes, interpret conditions and make informed decisions when navigating.
Assessment is usually carried out through exercises and tests during the course rather than one final exam. These help confirm your understanding as you progress.
Instructors provide support and feedback throughout, helping you improve in any areas where you’re less confident.
For classroom learning, you’ll need basic stationery and may want your own navigation tools such as a plotter and dividers, although these can often be purchased if needed.
Online learners will need a computer or tablet with internet access. Having a quiet space to work through exercises is also helpful.
Yes, this course is a key step for those planning to charter a yacht or motor cruiser. It provides the knowledge needed to understand navigation, safety and passage planning.
Many charter companies expect this level of knowledge, especially when combined with practical experience.
When booking, you’ll need to check the available dates and locations on the form, as different sessions run at different venues.
If you’re unsure which option suits you best, guidance is available to help you choose between classroom or online learning based on your schedule and learning style.
