Take your navigation and seamanship knowledge further with advanced online RYA theory training designed for experienced boaters and aspiring Yachtmasters. Combining structured self-paced study with instructor guidance, this course prepares students for longer coastal and offshore passages with greater confidence and decision-making ability.
Designed as the next progression after Day Skipper theory training, this advanced online course develops the knowledge needed for more demanding coastal and offshore cruising. Lessons begin by revisiting key Day Skipper concepts before moving into more advanced navigation, pilotage, meteorology and offshore passage planning skills.
Training covers longer passage preparation, advanced chartwork, tidal stream calculations, weather systems, collision regulations and safe decision making at sea. Students also develop a greater understanding of night navigation using lights, visual references and practical pilotage techniques used during offshore cruising and Yachtmaster-level passage planning.
Learning takes place through structured online modules featuring lessons, quizzes, mock exams and online assessments supported by instructor feedback throughout the course. Official RYA training materials are included, and students receive continued support by phone, email and video guidance whenever needed. Successful completion prepares students for advanced practical training and Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore progression.
Training is completed entirely online, allowing students to study from anywhere while fitting lessons around work schedules, boating activities and other commitments. Flexible access makes it possible to progress steadily through the syllabus at your own pace without attending classroom sessions.
Knowledge gained throughout the course is directly applicable to real offshore boating situations and prepares students for practical training in tidal cruising environments such as the Solent. The theory covered supports both sail and motor cruising activities involving longer and more complex passages.
Previous boating knowledge at Day Skipper level is strongly recommended before starting this course. Students should ideally have some experience onboard as crew or skipper, along with familiarity with charts, tides and passage planning concepts.
A computer or tablet with reliable internet access is required to complete the online training. Plotters and dividers are recommended for navigation exercises, while instructor support remains available throughout to help students work through more advanced topics.
Training focuses on practical offshore navigation understanding rather than simply learning theory for exams, helping students develop the confidence needed for real passage planning and advanced cruising situations. Flexible online learning combined with direct instructor support creates a structured yet approachable training experience for progressing skippers.
Courses follow recognised RYA standards while using interactive teaching methods including quizzes, mock exams, realistic navigation exercises and guided feedback. Students benefit from instructor support throughout their studies along with continued access to learning materials after completion for future reference onboard.
This course is aimed at experienced boaters preparing for more advanced skippering, offshore cruising and Yachtmaster-level practical training. It is particularly suitable for Day Skipper graduates wanting to expand their navigation and passage planning knowledge.
Many students take this course before working towards Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore practical examinations and longer coastal or offshore passages.
Formal qualifications are not required before joining, but previous knowledge at Day Skipper level is strongly recommended to help students understand the advanced syllabus more comfortably.
Important Day Skipper topics are briefly refreshed during the course before progressing into more detailed offshore navigation, pilotage and meteorology training.
Most students spend around 40 hours completing the course, although study time varies depending on previous experience and learning pace.
Flexible online access allows lessons to be completed around work, boating schedules and family commitments over weeks or months as needed.
Training takes place through an online learning platform featuring structured lessons, quizzes, mock exams and online final assessments supported by instructor guidance.
Students can study at their own pace while receiving support and feedback through email, phone or video whenever help is needed during the course.
Successful completion leads to the RYA Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster Shorebased Theory Certificate, a recognised advanced boating qualification.
This certificate demonstrates a strong understanding of offshore navigation, meteorology, passage planning and advanced seamanship skills used during coastal and offshore cruising.
Students require a computer or tablet with reliable internet access to complete the online learning and assessments.
Plotters and dividers are recommended for chartwork and navigation exercises, while official RYA study materials and the student pack are included as part of the course.
Yes. Night navigation forms an important part of the syllabus, including the use of navigation lights, visual references and pilotage techniques during reduced visibility or darkness.
Students learn how to apply navigation principles safely during offshore passages and longer coastal cruising situations.
Many students continue onto Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore practical training after completing the theory syllabus. Practical courses help apply advanced navigation and passage planning skills onboard in real offshore conditions.
Combining theory with practical experience allows skippers to develop greater confidence managing longer passages, offshore cruising situations and more complex navigation challenges.
