Saddle up for a full day of horse riding through one of Bulgaria’s most scenic mountain regions. Following trails through forests, open meadows and high mountain landscapes, this private adventure leads to Perelik Peak, the highest point in the Rhodope Mountains and a destination few visitors experience from horseback.
After meeting your guide and getting acquainted with your horse, you'll set off into the Rhodope Mountains along trails that wind through forests and open countryside. The route gradually climbs higher into the mountains, with every section revealing new views across valleys, ridgelines and some of Bulgaria’s most beautiful natural landscapes.
As the ride continues, you'll leave the more travelled routes behind and head towards Perelik Peak, the highest summit in the Rhodope range. Along the way, there are opportunities to stop for photos, enjoy the scenery and spend time appreciating the peaceful atmosphere that makes this region so special for horse riding.
Reaching the higher sections of the trail brings spectacular panoramic views across the surrounding mountains and towards the town of Smolyan below. A lunch stop is included during the experience, giving you time to relax before continuing the ride through the mountains and returning with plenty of memories and photographs from the day.
The Rhodope Mountains are among Bulgaria’s most distinctive mountain regions, known for their rolling landscapes, forests and traditional mountain villages. Compared to the country's higher alpine ranges, the Rhodopes offer gentler terrain that is perfectly suited to longer horseback adventures.
Perelik Peak sits at the highest point of the range and provides sweeping views across southern Bulgaria. The area around Smolyan and Pamporovo is particularly popular with outdoor enthusiasts thanks to its combination of mountain scenery, fresh air and extensive network of countryside trails.
You should feel comfortable spending several hours in the saddle and participating in outdoor activities across mountain terrain. While the experience is rated as easy, previous horse riding experience will help you make the most of the longer route and varied trails.
Long trousers and comfortable footwear with a small heel are recommended for riding. Bringing sun protection, water and weather-appropriate layers is also advisable as conditions can vary throughout the day in the mountains.
Horse riding offers a unique way to experience the Rhodope Mountains, allowing access to trails and viewpoints that many visitors never reach. Travelling at a slower pace creates more opportunities to enjoy the scenery, wildlife and peaceful atmosphere of the region.
Experienced local guides carefully match horses to riders and lead the route throughout the day, helping create an enjoyable adventure that combines mountain landscapes, authentic countryside and the rewarding feeling of reaching one of Bulgaria’s most impressive viewpoints.
The route is best enjoyed by riders who already feel comfortable handling a horse over longer distances. While the difficulty is rated as easy, spending several hours in the saddle is more enjoyable when you have some previous riding experience.
Your guide will assess riding ability before departure and help ensure both rider and horse are well matched for the day.
The overall experience lasts around six hours, with the majority of that time spent on horseback exploring the mountain trails. Breaks are included throughout the day to rest, enjoy the scenery and stop for lunch.
The pace remains relaxed, allowing plenty of time to appreciate the surroundings rather than focusing purely on covering distance.
Perelik Peak is the highest summit in the Rhodope Mountains and offers some of the finest views in the region. Reaching it on horseback adds an extra sense of adventure compared to visiting by vehicle or on foot.
The surrounding landscapes include forests, ridges and wide-open mountain scenery stretching across southern Bulgaria.
The experience uses trained horses selected for mountain riding and longer trail adventures. The horses are accustomed to the local terrain and guided tours within the Rhodope Mountains.
Your guide will help ensure the horse provided is suitable for your experience level and comfort.
Yes, lunch is included as part of the experience. The break provides an opportunity to relax, enjoy the mountain surroundings and recharge before continuing the ride.
This makes the experience particularly enjoyable as a full-day outdoor adventure without needing to organise meals separately.
Long trousers and comfortable footwear are strongly recommended. Clothing suitable for outdoor activity and changing mountain weather conditions will help ensure you remain comfortable throughout the ride.
Bringing additional layers is a good idea, especially during spring and autumn when temperatures can vary throughout the day.
Yes, the minimum age for this experience is 10. Younger riders should already feel confident around horses and be comfortable spending several hours taking part in an outdoor activity.
The guide will always prioritise safety and ensure the pace remains suitable for everyone taking part.
