Trade busy streets for winding mountain roads, forest trails and fresh mountain air on this full-day cycling experience through the Rhodope Mountains. With guided and self-guided options available, the tour combines challenging but rewarding riding with some of Bulgaria’s most beautiful countryside around Smolyan and Pamporovo.
The day begins with a journey towards the heart of the Rhodope Mountains, where long mountain roads, pine forests and open countryside create an ideal setting for cycling. Riders choosing the privately guided option are collected from Plovdiv before heading into the mountains with a professional local guide, while self-guided participants begin directly from Smolyan using the provided digital route maps.
Once on the bike, the experience combines scenic mountain roads with quieter trails passing through rolling hills, forest sections and traditional mountain landscapes. The area around Pamporovo is especially popular for outdoor activities thanks to its cooler mountain climate and wide-open riding routes, making every section feel slightly different from the last.
The ride is designed to balance adventure with flexibility, allowing riders to stop for photos, enjoy mountain viewpoints and take breaks throughout the day. Support vehicles are also available for the guided option, helping the experience feel relaxed while still offering a rewarding challenge for active cyclists.
Stretching across southern Bulgaria, the Rhodope Mountains are known for their forests, winding valleys and mountain villages surrounded by peaceful natural scenery. The region around Smolyan and Pamporovo offers some of the country’s best cycling terrain, with quieter roads and mountain routes far away from heavy traffic and crowded tourist areas.
The landscapes constantly change throughout the ride, from dense woodland and open meadows to panoramic mountain viewpoints. The area is also famous for its folklore, fresh mountain air and slower pace of life, giving the whole experience a very different atmosphere compared to the cities below.
Participants should feel comfortable cycling for extended periods across mixed mountain terrain including paved roads and countryside trails. A moderate level of fitness is recommended as some sections include climbs and longer riding distances throughout the day.
Comfortable outdoor clothing and suitable footwear are advised for the experience. Riders should also bring water, weather-appropriate layers and any personal essentials needed for a full day in the mountains.
This experience combines scenic mountain cycling with flexible riding options, allowing guests to choose between guided support or independent exploration. Carefully planned routes and local knowledge help riders experience quieter parts of the Rhodope Mountains that many visitors never reach.
Professional support, quality bikes and organised logistics allow guests to focus on the ride itself rather than route planning or transport arrangements. Whether riding with a guide or independently, the experience is designed to feel adventurous while remaining enjoyable and well-supported throughout the day.
The tour is suitable for riders with a moderate level of fitness who are comfortable cycling for several hours across mountain terrain. Some parts of the route include climbs and longer distances, although the pace can remain flexible depending on the group.
