Mermaiding offers a unique way to move through the water using a specially designed tail, combining swimming with a playful twist. This beginner-friendly session is held in a controlled pool setting, making it accessible to all ages and experience levels. You’ll be guided by a certified instructor as you learn basic mermaid swimming skills and enjoy fun activities in the water.
Your session starts with an introduction and safety briefing led by a certified mermaid instructor. You’ll learn how to properly wear and adjust the merfin tail and receive instructions on basic swimming techniques specific to mermaiding. The instructor will guide you through essential movements, including how to glide through water, control your buoyancy, and hold your breath safely.
After getting comfortable on the surface, you’ll practise some underwater swimming and playful activities designed to build your confidence and control. The session also includes games and fun exercises to help you experience the feeling of being a mermaid while improving your water skills. The environment is relaxed and encouraging, making it suitable for all skill levels and ages.
Sessions take place at Highworth Pool in Swindon or The Forest School in Wokingham, both offering indoor swimming facilities with warm, clear water ideal for beginners. These venues have shallow areas perfect for practising mermaid swimming in a safe and controlled environment.
Both locations are easily reachable by car, with available parking and nearby public transport links. They provide clean, modern facilities designed to make your experience comfortable and enjoyable from start to finish.
Participants should be comfortable in water and able to swim at a basic level, though no prior experience with diving or specialised swimming is necessary. Being in good physical health is important to safely participate. Children must be at least six years old to join the session. Those with certain health conditions or recent surgery should consult a physician before taking part.
Experienced instructors deliver high-quality guidance in a safe and supportive setting, ensuring every participant enjoys the session while progressing at their own pace. Their expertise with beginners makes the experience engaging and accessible for all ages.
Clean, modern pools and attentive staff create a comfortable learning environment. Focus remains on providing an enjoyable and relaxed experience that builds confidence and develops skills in the water.
Mermaiding is a swimming activity where participants use a specially designed tail, called a merfin, to move through the water in a way that mimics a mermaid’s swimming style. The session introduces you to basic mermaid swimming techniques, breath control, and safety, all within a safe, shallow pool environment.
During the session, you will learn how to wear and swim confidently with the tail, practise underwater gliding, and take part in fun exercises that build water confidence. It’s designed for beginners, so no prior swimming or diving experience is required.
The session is suitable for anyone aged six and above who is comfortable in the water and able to swim at a basic level. It welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, making it a great activity for children, teens, and adults looking to try something new and enjoyable.
If you have any medical concerns, such as respiratory or cardiovascular issues, or recent surgery, it’s advisable to consult your doctor before booking. Good physical health is important for safe participation, but no advanced swimming skills are needed.
You should bring your own swimwear, towel, and any personal items you might need, such as goggles or swim caps. The session includes hire of the merfin tail and other necessary equipment, so there’s no need to bring specialised gear.
It’s also a good idea to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated and comfortable footwear for walking around the poolside. Wearing comfortable clothing to and from the venue is recommended.
Each session typically lasts around two hours, providing enough time for briefing, learning, practice, and fun activities in the water. The duration allows for a relaxed pace so everyone can absorb the techniques and enjoy the experience fully.
Groups are kept small to ensure personalised attention from the instructor. This means you’ll receive tailored guidance and plenty of opportunity to ask questions and improve your skills.
While participants should be comfortable in water and able to swim at a basic level, the session is designed to build confidence gradually. Instructors provide supportive guidance to help nervous swimmers feel safe and encouraged throughout.
However, if you are unable to swim or have significant fear of water, this might not be the best introduction to water activities. It’s important to feel at ease in the pool environment before attempting mermaiding techniques.
If you have any chronic health conditions, are pregnant, or have recently had surgery, you should seek medical advice before booking. Certain medications or conditions may affect your ability to safely participate in water-based activities.
The organisers prioritise your safety and will advise if the session might not be suitable in specific cases. Always disclose relevant medical information when booking so they can provide appropriate guidance.
