NNAS Night Owl Navigation Course on Dartmoor

This course is designed for those who are already fairly competent in daytime navigation and want to extend their skills to night or low-visibility conditions. It is suitable for walkers, leaders, Scouts, Guides, or Duke of Edinburgh volunteers seeking practical confidence in navigation.

It is not intended for complete beginners, but individuals with limited experience can attend if willing to focus on the practical exercises and guidance provided.

You will explore different torch types and how to use them effectively for navigation, including angle, beam control, and conserving battery life. The training covers how to balance reliance on light with maintaining natural night vision.

Techniques are practised in the field during exercises, showing how lighting can assist in reading maps, identifying terrain features, and safely moving across uneven ground.

Exercises involve planned legs across terrain that allows you to apply bearings, pacing, and micro-navigation techniques. You will navigate routes in reduced light, practising relocation methods and decision-making when visibility is limited.

Each exercise builds on previous learning, increasing in complexity to reinforce confidence and competence. Real-time feedback helps identify adjustments to technique and approach.

Yes. Courses can be arranged on Exmoor, Bodmin Moor, or other suitable locations in the South West UK. Each site is assessed in advance to ensure safe terrain, identifiable features, and appropriate navigation challenges.

This flexibility allows training closer to home while maintaining the same standard of instruction and practical experience as a moorland-based session.

Approximately half of the four-hour session is conducted in low light or darkness to ensure realistic practice of night navigation techniques. The remainder includes briefings, skill demonstrations, and feedback sessions.

Exercises are structured to maximise learning in darkness while providing safe transitions and support as skills are introduced and practised.

A reliable torch or headtorch with spare batteries is essential. Suitable walking boots, weather-appropriate clothing, and a small rucksack for personal items are recommended.

Maps and compasses are provided, but bringing your own navigation kit can enhance familiarity. Water and snacks are advised for comfort and hydration.

Yes. Completion of the course earns an NNAS Night Owl certificate, recognising competence in night and low-visibility navigation.

The certificate can be used to demonstrate skills for leadership awards, Scout or Guide permits, or personal achievement in outdoor navigation.

The course requires a minimum of four people to run. Individual bookings are welcome, but the session will only go ahead when there are between four and six attendees, ensuring that exercises are practical, safe, and enjoyable.

If you book as an individual, you may be placed with other attendees to reach the required number. This arrangement allows for a full learning experience while maintaining safety and sufficient instructor support throughout the session.
