What to Expect
Over two days, you’ll learn and apply navigation skills directly in the Dartmoor landscape. Day one focuses on building the basics, with practical instruction on reading maps, using compasses, and following linear features like paths and boundaries. You’ll work on understanding different map types, learning how to relate the map to your surroundings, and start developing techniques for estimating distance. There's also time spent covering safety, access rights, and what to do if things don’t go to plan.
On day two, you’ll take the lead in planning a short walk alongside the group, putting your skills into practice. The walk will give you the chance to confirm locations, follow a route using handrails, and recognise when adjustments are needed. Your instructor will support you throughout, helping you build confidence and refine your technique. By the end of the course, you should feel well-prepared to plan and enjoy your own walks independently.
Location
This course takes place in Dartmoor National Park, a great location for learning to navigate thanks to its mix of open moorland, wooded areas, and varied terrain. Dartmoor also provides a safe yet realistic environment for practising the types of navigation you’ll use on your own future adventures.
We typically meet in the eastern or central part of Dartmoor, selected for its range of accessible walking routes and features useful for teaching map skills. Full joining details will be provided after booking.
