Navigation courses provide the essential skills for safely finding your way in the outdoors, whether you are just starting out or looking to refine your skills. With options catering to beginners, intermediates, and advanced learners, this training offers the expertise needed to confidently navigate in various environments. These courses cover the use of maps, compasses, and modern technology to help you make informed decisions while exploring the wilderness.
Designed for those who are already comfortable with navigation but want to build on their skills, this course introduces more advanced techniques. You will learn how to navigate away from paths, deal with disorientation, and plan routes effectively. The course will also cover how to assess the environment to ensure you remain on track, even in more challenging conditions.
Location
These courses take place in some of the UK’s most scenic and challenging environments, such as the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) or the South Downs National Park. Each location is chosen for its diverse terrain, providing the perfect setting to develop and test your navigation skills in a real-world environment. Alternative venues can be arranged to suit your preferences or specific needs.
For the intermediate a basic understanding of map reading and compass use is recommended. All participants should be in good physical health and prepared to spend a full day outdoors, regardless of weather conditions.
Scott, the instructor, has taken part in expeditions overseas, gaining valuable personal experience in a range of environments, including Norway, Sweden, New Zealand, Nepal, and Iceland. His background as a firefighter and frontline medical responder further enhances his ability to teach practical and safety-focused navigation skills. With qualifications such as Winter Mountain Leader, Summer Mountain Leader and Rock Climbing Instructor, Scott has a deep understanding of what it takes to navigate in diverse environments and is passionate about sharing this knowledge with others.
By joining these courses, you’ll benefit from expert guidance in a small group setting, ensuring individual attention and tailored instruction. Scott’s goal is to empower you with the skills and confidence to take on any terrain, whether you’re hiking your first mountain or planning your next adventure.
All sessions are scheduled based on demand. Get in touch to check upcoming dates or to request a specific day.
Timings depend on the venue, activity, time of year, and weather conditions.
All instruction is provided within the scope of qualification, along with any specialist or technical equipment required for the course. This includes maps and compasses for navigation courses.
If you have your own technical equipment, you are welcome to bring it, especially for skills courses, as it is beneficial to become familiar with your own kit. Any equipment provided is loaned at the participant's responsibility, and loss or damage may be chargeable.
Personal equipment, clothing, food, accommodation, and transport are not included unless specifically agreed beforehand.
Your guide will be in touch after booking to discuss the details.
Outdoor activities naturally involve some level of risk, which cannot be entirely removed without affecting the experience.
While every effort is made to ensure safety, participants must assess whether they are comfortable with the level of risk involved.
Participants must be 18 or older. Under 18s may take part but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, who will be responsible for them at all times.
If you are booking for a family or mixed-age group, ask the team before you book so the day can be planned around everyone taking part.
As the activities are physical, participants should be comfortable walking up and down hills and spending a full day outdoors.
Being prepared for all weather conditions is also important, as the course continues in typical UK hill weather.
The intermediate course builds on the skills learned in the basic course and introduces more complex navigation techniques. You will move away from marked paths and navigate in less obvious areas.
The course also covers strategies for staying oriented when you lose your place and how to plan routes in varied terrain. You will develop confidence navigating off-track and dealing with challenges that come up in the hills.
We had an incredible day with Scott sea cliff climbing in Swanage. He was a kind, personable and thoughtful instructor who was led by our needs and skill levels. He provided all the equipment we needed and took the time to answer our (many) questions about outdoor climbing. Cannot recommend…
