What to Expect

Each rental starts with a quick size check and bike adjustment to suit your height, with optional extras like a basket, helmet, or panniers available at the desk. After a short demo on how to use the integrated locks and dashboard display, you're ready to roll. If hiring for multiple days, you’ll receive a charger to take with you.

Once out on the road, the 36V 250W rear wheel drive motor provides a quiet but powerful boost to your pedalling, making it easy to handle hills and longer distances without effort. The 7-speed gearing allows for flexible riding whether you’re cruising at 25km/h or slowing down to take in the architecture. The 4-inch-wide tyres grip the road well, especially handy when cycling over cobbles or uneven surfaces.

The illuminated LCD display shows speed, distance and remaining battery, so you’re never caught out. Lights are built in for safer riding after dark, and hydraulic disc brakes offer sharp stopping when needed. With a maximum load capacity of 180kg, there’s room for shopping bags or heavier luggage if you're planning a day out.

Location

Located in the heart of the Raval neighbourhood, just off La Rambla and minutes from Plaça de Catalunya, the hire shop is easily accessible by foot, metro or bike. The area is ideal for starting your ride, with direct access to Barcelona’s growing network of cycle lanes.

From here, it’s a short ride to the beach, Montjuïc, the Arc de Triomf, and the popular Eixample and Gràcia districts. Plenty of designated bike parking is available around the city, especially near train stations and public squares.

Prerequisites

Riders must be aged 16 or over to use the Fat E-Bike. No licence or helmet is required by law in Barcelona, although helmets are recommended, especially for longer rides. You should feel comfortable cycling in light urban traffic and be familiar with basic road awareness.

Clear instructions will be given at collection to ensure safe use of the e-bike, locks, and charging equipment.

Veelgestelde vragen:

What is included in the bike rental?

When you hire a bike, everything you need for a smooth and enjoyable ride is taken care of. Each rental includes a high-quality, Dutch-made bicycle that is carefully maintained and thoroughly checked for safety and performance before each use.

You’ll also receive two locks—a frame lock and a cable lock—so you can secure your bike properly when not in use. For electric bikes, a third lock is provided for extra security. As part of the service, you’re welcome to use the free Wi-Fi available in the shop, and staff are always on hand to answer any questions or offer local cycling tips.

What bike sizes are available?

We have a range of bike sizes to suit most people, whether you're tall, short, or somewhere in between. Our city bikes are available in two adult frame sizes, designed to accommodate a wide range of heights.

To ensure the best possible fit, all bikes come with adjustable saddles and handlebars, which can be fine-tuned to your height before you set off. If you’re unsure which size you need, our team will be happy to help you choose and make the adjustments for you on the spot.

For younger riders, we also stock two different sizes of children’s bikes. These can be viewed/booked via the link at the bottom of this page.

How do I lock the bike securely?

Although Barcelona is considered one of the safer European capitals, bike theft can be a problem, which is why we provide strong, reliable locks with every rental. Each bike comes with a built-in ring lock as well as a separate cable lock.

If you're renting an e-bike, a third lock is provided for added peace of mind. The recommended method is to use the ring lock to secure the back wheel and frame, and then use the cable lock to attach the bike to a fixed object like a bike rack, gate, or sturdy post.

If you’re cycling as part of a group, it’s also a good idea to chain the bikes together using the cable lock. Always double-check that the locks are fastened correctly and never secure your bike to something that can easily be moved or broken.

What should I wear when cycling?

Comfort and practicality are key when deciding what to wear while cycling around Barcelona. Choose clothing suited to the day’s weather, but make sure it allows freedom of movement. Lightweight, breathable materials are ideal in warm weather, while layering is useful if it’s cool—especially in the mornings or evenings.

You might start off feeling chilly, but after a few kilometres, your body temperature will rise, and you may want to remove a layer. Avoid tight or restrictive clothing, especially trousers, as these can become uncomfortable on longer rides. Footwear should also be suitable for pedalling—trainers or flat-soled shoes are best.

Are there any areas in Barcelona where it’s not safe to cycle?

Barcelona is generally a very safe place to cycle, with well-developed infrastructure and a strong cycling culture.

There are no specific areas that should be avoided altogether. However, as with any city, it’s wise to use your judgement. If a street feels too quiet or isolated at night and makes you uncomfortable, it’s best to take a more active or well-lit route. Sticking to marked cycle lanes and busier streets after dark is always a safer option.

Where am I allowed to park the bike?

While cycling in Barcelona is easy, parking your bike correctly is important to avoid fines or your bike being removed. You should always aim to use designated bicycle racks, which are widely available across the city. These racks provide a secure place to leave your bike and help keep footpaths and roads clear.

Never park your bike in the road, on pedestrian crossings, or in the middle of the pavement where it could obstruct others. In high-traffic areas such as train stations or busy plazas, be especially careful to use the marked bicycle parking zones. If in doubt, ask the rental staff for recommended locations.

Can I charge the Fat E-Bike during my rental period?

Yes, if you’re renting the Fat E-Bike for more than one day, you’ll be provided with a charger at no extra cost. The charger is compact and easy to use, and the battery can be recharged from any standard power socket. Many cafés and public spaces in Barcelona are happy to let you charge while you stop for a break, especially if you’re grabbing a drink or a snack.

The full charge time is typically around 4–6 hours, and with a full battery, you can expect a range of up to 45 kilometres depending on how much electric assistance you use. If you're unsure how to connect the charger, staff at the shop will explain it clearly before you leave.

Is there a minimum age to rent or ride the Fat E-Bike?

Yes, the Fat E-Bike is only available for riders aged 16 and over. This is due to the size, weight, and power of the bike, which is designed for adult use and not suitable for younger riders.

The bike’s frame and electric motor require a certain level of control and awareness in urban settings, especially when sharing space with other cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles. Proof of age may be requested at the time of hire, so please bring ID if you look under 18. Children’s bikes are available separately and can be hired via the link at the bottom of the page.
