Day one is the Lukla flight from Thamel, then three to four hours to Phakding and the Hillary-bridge climb into Namche. A rest day still includes a hike toward Everest View Hotel or Khumjung, after which the trail continues through Tengboche monastery to Dingboche without a second rest night. Stages after Namche are often five to seven hours on stone and moraine, so consecutive teahouse nights need to feel normal.
Base Camp at 5,364 metres is reached from Gorak Shep on the same afternoon you arrive there, after a straight day from Dingboche to Lobuche. Optional Kala Patthar at 5,545 metres is a pre-dawn start, then a long drop to Pheriche, Namche and Lukla, with the Kathmandu flight on day eleven. Duffels travel with the crew, walking-day meals are included, and spare time is thinner than on the sixteen-day calendar if weather or fatigue slows a stage.
Shorter calendars need a clear plan for daily distance and fewer rest nights, and that is what the Thamel briefing is for. Permits, Lukla flights and lodge space are handled as one package, with a licensed leader for a small group. Altitude management is discussed before you fly, not after the first headache.
Sleep, appetite and walking speed are watched on the trail, and the group can be slowed or turned if someone is not coping. Porter loads, domestic connections and lodge nights are organised from Kathmandu so the tighter rhythm is already in place.
Morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, then a gentle trek along the Dudh Koshi through Sherpa villages and suspension bridges to Phakding (about 3 to 4 hours).
Sherpa villages and suspension bridges line the river valley. Porters usually pass ahead so your main bag is waiting at the lodge when you arrive.
Even on shorter first days, hydrate steadily and keep sunscreen handy on open sections. Your guide checks how everyone feels before tomorrow's climb toward Namche.
Cross prayer-flagged bridges and climb the main trail into Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa hub of the Khumbu. Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam begin to dominate the skyline as you gain height.
The climb from the river includes the famous Hillary suspension bridge and a steady pull into the amphitheatre of peaks above town. Bakeries, gear shops, and espresso stops make Namche a welcome rest hub.
Spend the evening sorting layers for higher cold and charging devices while power is available. Your guide may outline acclimatization hikes or tomorrow's trail time over dinner.
Rest day in Namche with short hikes higher to sleep low, as on the published eleven-day Everest Base Camp short trek.
A popular option is the hike toward Everest View Hotel or Khumjung for wider panoramas, then return to town. Even a few hundred metres higher helps your body adapt.
Use the afternoon for gear checks, optional museum visits, or a slow stroll through market stalls. Skip alcohol and drink plenty of fluid so appetite stays strong.
Walk through rhododendron forest with Ama Dablam overhead until Tengboche monastery appears on the ridge. Many groups pause for monastery views before settling into the lodge below the gompa.
If timing allows, listen for chanting and watch light change on the ice walls. Ask your guide about respectful photography inside sacred spaces.
The lodge area sits just below the gompa; evenings cool quickly once the sun drops. Pack a warm layer for dinner and turn in early if tomorrow climbs higher.
The trail opens into alpine country with wider views toward Lhotse and neighbouring summits. Dingboche spreads across stone-walled fields where the air already feels noticeably thinner.
The Imja Khola valley widens here and walking feels more exposed, so windproof layers help even on clear afternoons.
Turn in early if tomorrow is another walking day or a ridge hike for acclimatization, depending on your confirmed schedule.
Glacial moraine and memorial chortens mark the approach to Lobuche, where peaks feel close and the walking day is often long. Teahouses here are simple but welcome after steady altitude gain.
The air feels thinner; slow steps and steady breathing matter more than speed. Eat fully at dinner even if appetite is muted.
Walking pace stays steady with breaks for water, snacks, and photos. Lunch is usually in a teahouse en route; dinner and breakfast are at the lodge where you sleep, often dal bhat or hot noodle dishes.
Reach Gorak Shep, leave heavier packs at the lodge, and continue to Everest Base Camp beside the Khumbu Icefall. Standing among expedition camps at 5,364 metres is the highlight many walkers remember most.
Many groups walk to Base Camp with a light load. The icefall and colourful expedition tents make the moraine walk unforgettable when weather holds.
Altitude still rules at 5,300 metres plus: sip water often, wear sun protection on snow glare, and follow your guide's call on when to turn back for the overnight lodge.
Optional pre-dawn climb to Kala Patthar for classic Everest portraits, then a long descent to lower elevation where breathing feels easier and lodge nights grow warmer.
A pre-dawn start is common for viewpoints; pack a head torch, insulated layers, and gloves for windchill above 5,000 metres. Your guide sets a turn-around time so you descend before afternoon cloud builds.
The climb is steep but non-technical trekking: poles help on the way down. Celebrate the panorama, then pace the descent so knees and altitude recovery stay manageable for the next lodge night.
Gravity helps on the return through familiar Khumbu villages, with time to notice trailside details you missed on the way up. Hot showers and bakery stops in Namche feel like a reward after high camp.
Downhill days feel faster but hammer knees on long stone steps. Trekking poles and steady pacing protect joints as oxygen gradually feels richer.
You will notice details missed on the ascent: side valleys, chortens, and village life. Lunch stops break up the drop in elevation before the next lodge night.
The last full walking day drops through forest and farmland toward Lukla airstrip. Celebrate with your crew over dinner and pack flight documents where you can reach them at dawn.
The trail crosses one last round of bridges before the airstrip town. Weather can still shift flight times, so keep one clean outfit and documents packed separately.
Early bed helps when a dawn airport call comes. Your guide confirms tomorrow's briefing if you fly out in the morning.
Morning flight from Lukla to Kathmandu when weather allows, then onward travel or international departure.
Queues at Tenzing-Hillary Airport move quickly when the weather window opens; stay near the gate with your passport ready. Weight limits are strict, so confirm which bags fly with you and which porters carry down separately.
Back in Kathmandu you can shower, sort laundry, and enjoy a proper meal in Thamel. Share flight times with your hotel so airport transfers or international connections stay on track if the mountain sector runs late.
Fly into Tribhuvan International Airport and share arrival details so we can arrange a Thamel transfer, or make your own way to the meeting hotel. Pre-trek briefings usually happen in Kathmandu shortly before the Lukla flight.
Allow buffer time after the trek for possible flight delays on the return from Lukla before you connect with international flights home.
Kathmandu rooms sit around the Lukla flights, usually in Thamel, as twins or doubles with a private bathroom. Briefing happens there, and airport collection is available when arrival times are shared. If the mountain sector is delayed, that city room is also where you wait for the next weather window.
Lobuche and Gorak Shep rooms are the most basic on the walk, after more comfortable teahouses from Phakding through Namche and Tengboche. Twin beds and a stove in the dining room are typical, and bathrooms get simpler as you climb. A warm bag is worth carrying. Lodge space is reserved from Kathmandu. Power, showers and Wi-Fi, when they exist, are lodge extras.
You cover the same classic villages and reach Everest Base Camp, but walking days are longer and rest stops are fewer, so hill fitness matters more than on a leisurely calendar.
If you already hike regularly and recover well overnight in simple lodges, this rhythm suits you. Adventuro Chat is a good place to compare dates if you would rather add a buffer night.
Spring from March to May and autumn from September to November usually bring the clearest views and more stable walking conditions in the Khumbu.
Winter is quieter and colder at altitude, while monsoon months bring cloud and wet trails lower down. Ask us on Adventuro Chat if your travel month sits on a shoulder season.
Domestic flights between Kathmandu and Lukla are included when they form part of your confirmed package, including the return sector after the descent.
Mountain weather can still delay those flights in any month, so keep a flexible international ticket after the trek. We update you as soon as the morning weather window is known.
We arrange Sagarmatha National Park entry and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu rural municipality permits once we have your passport copies and trek dates.
You do not need to queue in Kathmandu for those papers. Bring a digital and paper copy of your passport page so the team can file everything before the Lukla morning.
You should be comfortable walking five to seven hours on uneven stone paths with a daypack, then repeating that effort the next morning after a teahouse night.
Stair sessions, weekend hill walks, and longer back-to-back hikes in the months before travel make the tighter calendar far more enjoyable. Tell us honestly about recent walking so we can advise.
Yes. Many groups climb Kala Patthar at dawn for the classic Everest portrait when legs, weather, and cloud cooperate, then descend to a lower lodge.
Your guide sets a turn-around time so you are not caught high if wind or headache builds. Skipping the viewpoint is always acceptable if you prefer to protect energy for the walk out.
A licensed guide, porter support at the confirmed ratio, teahouse lodging, and full-board meals on walking days are included unless your confirmation states otherwise.
Hot showers, Wi-Fi, device charging, bottled drinks, and snacks outside meals are usually lodge extras you pay locally. Carry small notes for those comforts along the trail.
You need comprehensive travel insurance that covers trekking above 5,000 metres, medical treatment, and helicopter evacuation in the Khumbu.
Carry the policy documents and emergency numbers in your daypack, not only in a checked bag. We can help you check the wording on Adventuro Chat before you fly.
Yes. Fixed departures can run with a minimum of one guest, and you often share the trail and lodge dining rooms with other walkers.
If you want exclusive dates for yourself or a pair of friends, message us on Adventuro Chat and we will look at a private departure on the same route.
We meet in Thamel after an airport or hotel pickup when you share arrival details in advance, or you can make your own way to the confirmed meeting hotel.
The pre-trek briefing usually happens the evening before the Lukla flight. Keep one easy-to-reach outfit and your passport ready for an early start.
