Take on the Eliminator, one of northern Thailand's most demanding cross country mountain bike routes. A 4WD shuttle lifts you to Doi Pakia opposite Chiang Dao mountain before a long descent through pine forest, hill tribe villages and rarely used dirt roads into the upper Mae Taeng valley.
An early start with hotel pickup and bike fitting precedes the long drive north toward Doi Pakia. The 4WD shuttle climbs to the trailhead where your guide briefs the group on the day's elevation profile and safety protocols before the descent begins.
Two medium mountain climbs test your legs before a winding downhill run through rice fields to Sopkai village in the Mae Taeng valley. Snacks and drinking water keep you going on this very strenuous day reserved for fit, experienced riders only.
The shuttle back to Chiang Mai arrives in the early evening after roughly eight hours on the bike, one of our hardest single-day routes in the Chiang Dao highlands.
Doi Pakia rises in the Chiang Dao mountain range 75 km north of Chiang Mai, opposite Thailand's third-highest peak. Pine forest, jungle plantations and remote hill tribe country create a Himalayan atmosphere on tracks few cyclists ever ride. The route finishes in the upper Mae Taeng valley near Sopkai village, where farmland and river scenery reward the long effort.
Remote singletrack and sustained climbing make this feel like a proper expedition despite the single-day schedule from Chiang Mai. You'll ride through landscapes that shift from cool pine forest at altitude to warm rice paddies in the valley, a full cross-section of northern Thailand's highland country.
Excellent fitness and substantial mountain biking experience are essential. This is not suitable for beginners. Expect 8 hours on the bike with significant climbs, singletrack and sustained off-road riding in warm conditions.
Wear firm shoes, bring a day pack for snacks and water, sunscreen and a change of clothes. Riders from 16 are well suited to the full route; younger teens from 14 may join with strong off-road background.
We reserve our hardest routes and canyon runs for guides who paddle and ride at an advanced level themselves, with honest pre-trip advice so you join the right day for your skills. Hotel pickup, quality kit and small groups keep the focus on the line, not the logistics.
Our Chiang Mai base has been running technical mountain biking and white-water kayaking in northern Thailand for years. Tell us your experience level, and we'll match you to water levels and trail conditions that reward confident guests.
Hotel pickup around 8:30am brings you to the adventure base for sign-up, bike selection and gear fitting. Staff help you choose a mountain bike and helmet and answer questions about the long day ahead before the drive north toward Doi Pakia and Chiang Dao.
A scenic drive from 9:00am reaches the trailhead near the summit of Doi Pakia opposite the famous Chiang Dao range. Cool mountain air at around 1,750m and forest views set the scene for one of northern Thailand's most remote mountain bike descents.
From 11:30am you ride downhill toward Pakia village through singletrack and unused double jeep track past hill tribe settlements. Fast dirt road sections with steep drops and wide valley views dominate the early riding as you lose altitude into the upper valley.
Singletrack winds up and down over numerous small hills through farmland and hill tribe villages. Snacks and drinking water provided on the trail keep you fuelled as you tackle rolling terrain between the main descent and the climbs ahead toward the Mae Taeng valley.
Two medium mountain climbs test your fitness before a winding downhill run through rice fields and villages where you can put downhill skills to the test. The route threads remote back country toward Sopkai village in the Mae Taeng valley, arriving around 5:00pm at the latest.
After loading bikes, a transfer returns you to your Chiang Mai hotel around 6:30pm. Guides help unload gear so you can freshen up after one of the most physically demanding mountain bike days in northern Thailand.
The Eliminator is graded extreme and aimed at intermediate through expert riders with excellent fitness. You will ride roughly 45 km over 8 hours with 60% downhill but also two significant mountain climbs and lengthy singletrack sections through remote highland country. Beginners should not attempt this trip.
You need ample off-road experience, strong legs for the climbs and confidence on fast dirt road descents. If you are unsure, consider a moderate Doi Suthep downhill day first to benchmark your ability.
The minimum age is 14 years due to the strenuous distance and remote terrain. Riders from 16 are better suited to the full Eliminator route based on stamina and technical demands on singletrack and unused dirt roads. Be sure your teen has enough mountain biking experience for an 8-hour off-road day.
Helmets and correctly sized bikes are provided at the shop before departure. Be sure your child is comfortable with the duration and terrain.
Yes. Pickup is included from hotels and guesthouses in Chiang Mai city centre around 8:30am. You will be taken to the adventure base for sign-up and bike fitting before the drive north to Doi Pakia.
Share your accommodation details ahead of the trip so the driver can find you easily. Allow a few minutes either side of the stated pickup window. After arriving at Sopkai village around 5:00pm, a transfer returns you to your Chiang Mai accommodation, typically by 6:30pm depending on traffic and group pace.
Snacks and drinking water are provided during the ride to keep energy up on this long day. A sit-down lunch is not always included on the Eliminator route, so bring your own favourite snacks in your day pack. There may be opportunities to buy food at hill tribe stops depending on the day and route timing.
Pack more than you think you need for an 8-hour ride in warm conditions. Dietary preferences can usually be accommodated with advance notice. Bring a small snack if you like extra energy between scheduled meal stops.
Quality mountain bikes suited to cross country and downhill terrain are set up at the adventure base before departure. Helmets and safety gear are included and guides check brakes, gears and saddle height at the trailhead. Bring firm shoes suitable for flat pedals.
If you prefer your own gloves or a small saddle comfort item, pack it in your day bag for the long ride. Seat height and brakes are checked before you set off.
The route starts near 1,750m on Doi Pakia and drops to around 800m before climbing back to 990m and descending again to roughly 500m in the Mae Taeng valley. That roller-coaster profile makes leg strength as important as downhill skill.
Most of the day trends downhill overall, but the two medium mountain climbs are demanding. Excellent cardiovascular fitness helps you enjoy the descents rather than surviving them.
Tours run in most conditions and highland forest can be atmospheric in light rain. Heavy rain makes dirt roads and singletrack slippery, so guides adjust speed and may modify route choices for safety. In rare cases of unsafe weather or trail access issues, we may reschedule or suggest an alternative date.
Light rain often adds atmosphere without stopping the trip. Pack a light rain layer and a dry bag for electronics if showers are forecast.
The Eliminator runs from Doi Pakia summit opposite Chiang Dao mountain down through Pakia village and hill tribe country into the upper Mae Taeng valley, finishing near Sopkai village. You ride through pine forest, jungle, plantations and farmland rarely seen by tourists.
The Chiang Dao range provides dramatic backdrop views throughout the day. This is proper back-country riding far from Chiang Mai city traffic.
Personal fitness must be excellent. Rates this trip as very strenuous with 8 hours of riding across 45 km. Heat, humidity and significant climbs add to the challenge even though much of the route is downhill. Regular mountain biking training, gym fitness or long road rides help prepare your legs.
If you struggle on 3-hour rides, this is not the right trip yet. Pace yourself on climbs and drink water regularly throughout the day. Guides adjust rest stops to match the group so everyone can enjoy the scenery without rushing.
Arrive with sunscreen, plenty of water and comfortable clothing suited to the activity. Wear closed shoes with good grip, and pack a light rain layer if showers are possible during your visit to northern Thailand.
Leave bulky luggage at your hotel and bring only a small day pack for personal essentials. Share your accommodation name and contact number ahead of the trip so morning pickup runs smoothly on the day of your adventure.
