Hike to a Hmong hill tribe village high on Doi Pui, sleep at a coffee plantation hut, then descend by mountain bike to Huay Tueng Thao lake on this two-day hike-and-bike adventure from Chiang Mai. Overnight accommodation, meals, guides and bike hire are all arranged in one trip.
Day one begins with hotel pickup around 9:30am and a steady three-hour hike through highland jungle to the village near 1,450m. Optional climb to Doi Pui summit opens valley views before you check into basic plantation huts for the night.
Day two starts with breakfast and an optional summit walk, then mountain bikes and gear are waiting for the downhill run through forest and plantations to Huay Tueng Thao lake. Lunch, swimming and a truck ride back to Chiang Mai complete the adventure.
Your guide sets a comfortable hiking pace on day one and runs a full bike briefing before the descent, so you transition from trail to saddle with confidence.
Doi Suthep National Park rises above Chiang Mai protecting montane forest, Hmong hill tribe communities and the famous temple complex lower on the mountain. The hike reaches the highland zone near Doi Pui where cool jungle, pine forest and valley viewpoints create a world apart from the city below.
Overnight huts near the summit village place you in traditional highland country with stars and cool air after dark. Day two finishes at Huay Tueng Thao, a recreation lake on the edge of Chiang Mai popular with locals for swimming and bamboo-shore restaurants. The combination of national park wilderness and easy lakeside access makes this one of the most varied two-day adventures in the region.
Active guests with moderate fitness will enjoy this trip, expect a steady three-hour uphill hike on day one and several hours of downhill riding on day two. Good walking shoes with firm soles are essential on jungle trails.
For the bike section you should be comfortable on off-road surfaces for a couple of hours; no advanced technical skills are required. Bring a warm layer for the cool summit night, modest clothing for village stops, and swimwear for the lake on day two.
We run multi-day adventures from Chiang Mai with the same guides, gear and hotel transfers you get on our day trips, plus accommodation arranged and routes sequenced so each day builds naturally. Our team has years of experience on Doi Pakia, Doi Suthep and the Chiang Dao valley, so you get local pacing and safety calls in remote country.
We'll coordinate pickup, overnight stops and daily briefings. It's the simplest way to turn a weekend in northern Thailand into a proper expedition without piecing logistics together yourself.
Hotel pickup around 9:30am brings you to the adventure base for sign-up and bike fitting before the drive to Doi Suthep temple trailhead at around 1,100m. Guides brief you on the uphill hike ahead and arrange transport for your overnight bag.
From 11am you hike steadily for around three hours through highland jungle toward the Hmong village at 1,450m, passing magnificent Mai Yai trees indigenous to the area. A light lunch awaits at the village around 2pm with time to explore the settlement.
An optional one-hour return climb to Doi Pui summit at 1,650m offers wide Mae Ping valley views when weather is clear. You check in at the coffee plantation huts for the night with free time and dinner.
After breakfast you can optionally climb Doi Pui summit again before mounting your bike around 10:30am for the descent through plantations and forest toward Huay Tueng Thao lake. Viewpoints along the jeep track open across the Mae Ping valley as you drop from 1,400m to 370m.
Lunch and cool drinks await lakeside around 1:30pm with time to swim before a relaxed truck ride back to your Chiang Mai hotel around 2:30pm.
Day one is a steady three to four hour hike uphill through highland jungle to the Hmong village and coffee plantation at around 1,450m, gaining roughly 1,000m elevation. Day two is around two hours of downhill mountain biking to Huay Tueng Thao lake, dropping about 1,200m. Average fitness is enough for the hike if you pace yourself.
The bike section is mostly downhill on jeep tracks, suitable for beginner and intermediate riders. Guides adjust rest stops to match the group so everyone can enjoy the scenery without rushing.
No previous mountain biking experience is required for the downhill day if you are comfortable on a bike on uneven surfaces. The hike is steady rather than technical, following jungle trails through Doi Suthep National Park. Guides run a bike safety briefing at the village before the descent.
Nervous riders get extra support on the jeep tracks down to the lake. Your guide runs a safety briefing at the start and stays with the group throughout. Ask questions at any time if you want tips on technique or pacing.
The trip is suitable for children from 13 years old who are comfortable with a multi-hour hike and off-road biking. Younger children would find the uphill day and overnight conditions challenging. Be sure your child is comfortable with the duration and terrain.
Correctly sized equipment is provided on the day where applicable. Be sure your teen can manage both the hike and the bike descent.
Pickup is from hotels and guesthouses in Chiang Mai city centre around 9:30am on day one. You return to your accommodation around 2:30pm on day two after lunch at the lake. Share your accommodation details ahead of the trip so the driver can find you easily.
Allow a few minutes either side of the stated pickup window. A warm change of clothes for the overnight can be transported by vehicle while you hike.
Meals across the two days are included, including a light lunch at the village on day one and breakfast before the bike descent. Lunch at Huay Tueng Thao lake on day two is also covered. Dietary preferences can usually be accommodated with advance notice.
Bring a small snack if you like extra energy between scheduled meal stops. Alcohol and soft drinks are not included and have limited availability at the village.
The optional climb to Doi Pui summit at 1,650m takes about one hour return from the village. Weather permitting, you get wide views across the Mae Ping valley from the highest point in the national park.
It is optional on both afternoon of day one and morning of day two. Guides adjust timing so the group stays on schedule for the bike descent.
Yes, many guests swim at Huay Tueng Thao lake after lunch on day two. The lake is a popular local recreation spot with calm water near shoreside restaurants.
Changing facilities are basic near the water, so a sarong or cover-up is useful. Towels are not always provided, so bring your own if you plan to swim.
The trip runs year round in rain or shine. Jungle trails can be slippery in wet weather and guides adjust pace for safety on both the hike and bike sections. Light rain often adds atmosphere without stopping the trip.
Pack a light rain layer and a dry bag for electronics if showers are forecast. Pack a rain poncho in rainy season and waterproof cover for valuables.
Wear firm shoes with a good sole for the hike. Insect repellent and sunscreen are important in the jungle. A warm change of clothes for the overnight is essential as temperatures drop at 1,450m. Wear comfortable athletic clothing and closed shoes suitable for the activity.
A small day pack is enough for water, sunscreen and personal essentials. Your overnight bag can be transported by vehicle so you hike with a lighter day pack. Bikes and helmets are fitted on day two at the village.
Arrive with sunscreen, plenty of water and comfortable clothing suited to the activity. Wear closed shoes with good grip, and pack a light rain layer if showers are possible during your visit to northern Thailand.
Leave bulky luggage at your hotel and bring only a small day pack for personal essentials. Share your accommodation name and contact number ahead of the trip so morning pickup runs smoothly on the day of your adventure.
