Each two-hour private lesson includes expert tuition tailored to your level and goals. You'll receive guidance on paddling, positioning, and how to improve your wave-riding techniques. Whether you're working on catching your first waves or perfecting advanced turns, our instructors will focus on your individual progression.
After the lesson, enjoy an additional hour of free equipment hire to practice what you've learned on your own.
Our surf school is perfectly positioned just a short, level walk to the beach, making it easy for you to focus on surfing without the hassle of a long trek.
We have excellent parking facilities year-round, even during the busy summer months, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience from start to finish.
Ages 6 years and above. Children under 10 years old must be in a private lesson and be accompanied by an adult. If the adult is not surfing, we can provide a wetsuit for free.
No prior surfing experience is needed. Lessons are customised to suit all levels, from complete beginners to intermediate surfers looking to refine their skills.
Our surf school is Academy of Surfing Instructors Approved, ensuring you receive top-quality instruction. Established in 1999, we have over 24 years of surf coaching experience, making us one of the most trusted names in surf tuition.
We offer indoor changing rooms and classrooms to enhance your learning experience, and our prime location is just a short walk to the beach. You'll also benefit from excellent parking year-round, even during the summer. Whether you're booking for yourself, a small group, or a special event, our private surf lessons provide a personalised and enjoyable way to improve your skills.
You'll find us by Lula's (formerly the Rockpool Bar & Grill) just outside the village of Gwithian. The surf school and shop is within a 15-minute drive of St Ives and Hayle, and about 30 minutes from Penzance and Newquay.
By car, take the Hayle exit (near M&S) from the A30. After the Hayle exit roundabout you'll come to a double roundabout; take the third exit onto the B3301 towards Gwithian. Drive for about three miles, go through the village, then turn left after the humpback bridge. We're in the building just to the right of Lula's, with parking available year-round.
Bring something thin to wear under your wetsuit, such as a bathing costume or speedos. Underwear or boxers are fine; swimming shorts, trunks, or t-shirts tend to bunch up and feel uncomfortable in the water.
You'll also want a towel, a good high-factor sunscreen, and flip-flops or old shoes for the walk to the beach.

Yes, we do. With surfing you tend to get very wet anyway so it's an activity that rain doesn't affect too much.
We wouldn't go into the sea if there was thunder and lightning, fog and mist, or during a hailstorm. If the forecast looks awkward we'll be in touch about the plan for the day.
We ask that all our customers be able to swim at least 50m in open water, be at least 6 years of age, and free from any medical problem that might put you, our coaches, or other customers, at risk.
You don't need to be a marathon runner or Olympic swimmer to take part but if you have a chance to do a few lengths in a swimming pool in the weeks before your lesson it will make surfing a lot easier for you. However, don't worry if you haven't been to the pool in years, you will still be able to achieve a lot during the lessons and even just catching a wave is one of the simplest pleasures that there is.
Yes you can. While the surf school does close during the winter we can still provide lessons if you give us advance warning.
Get in touch ahead of time and we'll let you know what we can arrange for the dates you have in mind, including morning or afternoon slots if those still suit the tide.
The most important thing is to bring something to wear underneath your wetsuit. Something thin like a bathing costume or speedos are ideal as they are comfortable and won't bunch up. Underwear and boxers will do but you should avoid swimming shorts, trunks or t-shirts as they can be uncomfortable.
You should also bring a towel, a good quality high-factor sunscreen and some flip flops or old shoes for the walk to the beach.
Yes, they are. All of the equipment that you need for a surfing lesson are provided free of charge. This includes surfboards, wetsuits and, during the colder months, gloves, booties and hood.
You even get to use them for an extra hour after each lesson if you want to stay out practising.
All surfing lessons are 2 hours long. We advise that you check-in for your lesson 30 minutes beforehand so we can fit kit and run through a brief introduction.
That extra time means the two hours in the water stay focused on coaching, and you still get an extra hour of free hire afterwards to practise.
Please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled lesson time for check-in, equipment fitting, and a brief introduction.
For morning lessons, check-in is at 9:30am for a 10:00am start, and for afternoon lessons, check-in is at 1:00pm for a 1:30pm start.
Yes! Private lessons can be booked for up to 8 people. The fewer people in your group, the more personalised attention each person will receive. It's a great way to learn with friends or family, and it's also popular for children's birthday parties.
We can also arrange larger groups upon request, with multiple instructors. We still stick to a maximum of 8 participants per instructor to ensure you get the most out of your lesson.
Yes, we offer ample parking facilities year-round, even during the busy summer months.
Our location is also just a short, easy walk to the beach, so you won't have to worry about long treks with your gear.
Yes! We offer an hour of hire for free after the lesson, so you can keep practicing your new-found skills on the same board and wetsuit.
It's a useful extra window while the session is still fresh, and you're welcome to stay out if the conditions are still good for your group.
