It was a brilliant experience! I loved the sauna and the wild swimming. I have never done anything like it before. I would definitely recommend it to others to try!

Experience the lake in a whole new light with this unique night-time paddle session at Witton Castle. As dusk falls, the water comes alive with illuminated boards and kayaks, glowing softly beneath the night sky. It’s a peaceful yet exciting way to end the day, perfect for families, couples, or friends looking for something different.
As the sun begins to set, you’ll take to the calm waters of Witton Castle’s lake for a relaxed evening paddle. Every kayak and paddleboard is fitted with colourful lights that reflect beautifully across the water, creating a glowing display beneath the night sky. The experience is accompanied by gentle music, setting a calm and welcoming atmosphere as you float across the lake.
You’ll start by getting fitted with your chosen craft and buoyancy aid, followed by a short safety briefing. Once on the water, you can paddle at your own pace—whether that’s a gentle glide across the lake or a slow drift near the edge to take in the scenery. As the daylight fades, the lights shimmer brighter, turning the lake into a glowing spectacle that’s as relaxing as it is visually impressive.
At the end of your paddle, you’ll come ashore to dry off, warm up, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere that lingers long after the lights fade. It’s a session that feels both calming and uplifting, ideal for those wanting to unwind in a unique and social setting.
The event takes place at Witton Castle Country Park’s activity lake in County Durham, a beautiful and tranquil spot surrounded by lush trees and the striking backdrop of the historic castle. During sunset, the area transforms as the warm light reflects off the water, setting the perfect mood for an evening paddle.
Parking is free at the Castle, with a short walk through the grounds to reach the activity lakes. Once there, you’ll find a welcoming, open space to prepare for your session. It’s a safe and peaceful environment, ideal for night-time paddling with friends or family.
Participants should feel comfortable in and around water and be able to swim. Children are welcome but must share a craft with a supervising adult. You’ll need to wear suitable clothing that can get wet and bring a towel, change of clothes, and something warm to wear afterwards.
Old trainers or water shoes are recommended, as your feet will get wet when entering and exiting the lake. The team provides all lighting equipment and buoyancy aids, ensuring everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.
The centre is passionate about creating memorable outdoor experiences that combine adventure with a sense of calm. Each “Light Up the Lake” event is carefully planned to offer a safe, fun, and inclusive evening where everyone can appreciate the magic of being on the water after dark.
By blending gentle lighting, music, and a peaceful natural setting, these sessions create something special for both regular paddlers and first-timers. It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors in a new and unforgettable way while connecting with others who share the same love for adventure.
The main difference lies in the atmosphere. As the sun sets, the lake transforms under a canopy of soft lights and reflections from the illuminated boards and kayaks. The addition of gentle background music makes it a calming, social experience that feels completely different from a daytime session.
Unlike a normal paddle, this event allows you to enjoy the water in a relaxed, almost magical setting, surrounded by others sharing the same experience. It’s about taking things slow and soaking up the ambience rather than focusing on speed or technique.
Absolutely. The water at Witton Castle’s lake is calm and enclosed, making it ideal for beginners. Before heading out, staff will provide a short safety briefing and explain how to handle your craft confidently in low-light conditions.
The illuminated equipment adds visibility, so you’ll always be able to see others nearby, and the team is on hand to assist from the shore if needed. You don’t need prior experience—just a sense of adventure and confidence in the water.
Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting slightly wet, such as quick-drying sportswear or swimwear with an extra layer on top. Old trainers or water shoes are essential, as your feet will get wet when launching and exiting the lake.
After the session, you’ll want a towel, warm clothes, and perhaps a coat or blanket to stay cosy once you’re off the water. Evenings can get cooler, especially after being in the water, so it’s best to come prepared.
Yes, children are welcome to take part as long as they’re accompanied by a responsible adult on the same craft. It’s a fantastic family experience and an exciting way for kids to see the lake in a completely new light.
All participants, regardless of age, must wear a buoyancy aid and follow safety instructions. The calm nature of the lake ensures a safe and enjoyable paddle for everyone.
Each paddleboard and kayak is fitted with soft, waterproof LED lighting that shines through the water. The lights are securely attached and designed to provide visibility without being overly bright or distracting.
The effect is stunning to see from the water and even more so from the shore, as dozens of glowing craft move gently across the lake together. It’s both beautiful and functional, ensuring everyone can paddle safely in the dark.
No, everything you need for the session is provided—including your illuminated craft, paddle, and buoyancy aid. The lighting setup is already in place, so you just need to bring yourself, suitable clothing, and a towel for afterwards.
If you’d like to make the experience even more fun, you’re welcome to bring glow accessories or small lights to wear, as long as they don’t interfere with your movement or visibility.
Yes, gentle background music plays throughout the event to enhance the atmosphere. It’s kept at a low volume to create a calming environment, allowing paddlers to chat, relax, or simply enjoy the sounds of the evening.
The combination of lights, reflections, and soft music helps make the session feel immersive and unique—something that’s both social and soothing at the same time.
