It was a brilliant experience! I loved the sauna and the wild swimming. I have never done anything like it before. I would definitely recommend it to others to try!

Share time on the water with a double kayak hire set on a calm countryside lake, ideal for relaxed paddling and easy exploration. This session offers a flexible way to enjoy the surroundings, whether you paddle solo or with a partner. With gentle conditions and plenty of space, it’s well suited to families, friends, or couples looking for a laid-back outdoor activity.
Your session begins at the activity lake behind the castle, where you’ll be met lakeside and provided with a double kayak, paddles, and buoyancy aids. Before heading onto the water, there’s a clear safety briefing covering basic paddling techniques, how to steer as a pair, and what to do while on the lake. Once you’re ready, you’re free to launch and start paddling at your own pace, choosing how you want to spend your hour on the water.
As you move across the lake, you’ll have time to get into a rhythm, practise paddling together, or simply drift and enjoy being outdoors. The sheltered water makes it easy to feel comfortable, even if it’s your first time kayaking. Woodland surrounds the lake, with views back towards the castle adding interest as you paddle. After your session, many visitors stay to walk around the grounds, relax by the water, or head up to the castle area for food and drinks.
Set in the heart of County Durham countryside, Witton Castle Country Park offers open green space, woodland paths, and a dedicated activity lake tucked behind the main castle grounds. The lake is reached by parking at the castle, walking behind it, and passing through the gates towards the water.
Free parking is available on site, and facilities such as a café, bar, and fish and chip shop are located a short walk uphill at the castle. This makes it easy to turn your kayak hire into part of a longer visit, whether you’re planning a relaxed afternoon or a full day outdoors.
Participants should be confident in the water and able to swim. Under 18s must have an adult present at the lakeside throughout the session, while children under 8 can sit in the kayak with a parent or guardian. Suitable clothing for getting a little wet is recommended, along with a towel and change of clothes.
The sessions here are designed to be simple and welcoming, allowing guests to enjoy kayaking without pressure or time constraints beyond the hour on the water. Everything is prepared for you lakeside, so you can focus on paddling and enjoying your surroundings.
With calm water, easy access, and helpful staff on hand, this experience suits both first-timers and those who just want a gentle paddle. The peaceful setting within the park makes it a great option for sharing time outdoors and trying something active without it feeling demanding.
Yes, a single participant can use a double kayak if they prefer extra space and stability. Many solo paddlers enjoy the wider seating and steady feel, especially if they want a relaxed session without worrying about balance.
When paddling alone, you can sit in the rear or centre position depending on comfort. The safety briefing will explain the best setup so the kayak handles well on the water.
No previous kayaking experience is required to take part in this session. The lake is calm, and the briefing covers the basics of paddling, steering, and stopping before you launch.
Beginners often find double kayaks reassuring as they feel more stable on the water. You’re free to take things slowly and build confidence throughout the hour.
Not at all. Double kayaking works well even if one person does most of the paddling while the other helps steer or paddles gently. It’s a shared experience that can be adjusted to suit your comfort levels.
This makes it a good choice for couples, friends, or families where abilities may differ. You can swap roles during the session if you like.
It’s important to arrive at least 15 minutes before your start time so everything can run smoothly. This allows time for equipment fitting and the safety briefing.
If you arrive late, the session may be shortened and cannot be extended, as other bookings follow on. In some cases, missing too much time may mean the session can’t go ahead.
Children under 8 are welcome to sit in the kayak with a parent or guardian, provided everyone is comfortable and confident in the water. This allows families to share the experience together.
Children aged 8 and over can take part as participants, but anyone under 18 must have an adult present at the lakeside for supervision throughout the session.
Light, quick-drying clothing is ideal, as there’s a chance of getting splashed while paddling. Swimwear under your clothes can be useful, along with a towel and spare clothes for afterwards.
Footwear that can get wet is recommended, especially when getting in and out of the kayak at the water’s edge.
Yes, buoyancy aids are included for all participants and must be worn during the session. Paddles and the kayak itself are also provided as part of the hire.
The team will ensure equipment fits correctly and explain how to use it safely before you go on the water.
You’re free to paddle around the designated areas of the lake at your own pace. The briefing will explain any boundaries so everyone stays safe and has space to enjoy the session.
The lake layout allows plenty of room to explore, practise paddling together, or simply drift and enjoy being outdoors.
