Spend the day high above Sofia with a mountain adventure that combines scenic hiking trails and an unforgettable paragliding flight over the Bulgarian capital. From forest paths and panoramic viewpoints to soaring above the city itself, this private experience packs two outdoor adventures into one exciting day in the Vitosha Mountains.
Your adventure begins in the Vitosha Mountains just outside Sofia, where a professional mountain guide leads the hike through forest trails, mountain paths and scenic viewpoints overlooking the capital below. As you gain elevation, the city slowly disappears behind woodland landscapes and open mountain scenery, creating a completely different atmosphere from the busy streets below.
The hiking route is designed to build towards the main highlight of the day — your tandem paragliding experience above Sofia. Once conditions are suitable and preparations are complete, you’ll take off alongside an experienced pilot and glide above the mountain slopes with panoramic views stretching across the city, valleys and surrounding peaks.
Flying above Vitosha offers a unique perspective of Sofia and the surrounding countryside that very few visitors ever experience. The combination of active trekking and peaceful flight time creates an adventure that feels exciting, scenic and surprisingly relaxing all at once.
Rising directly above Sofia, Vitosha Mountain is one of Bulgaria’s most popular outdoor areas for hiking, winter sports and panoramic viewpoints. Its proximity to the capital makes it possible to go from city streets to mountain scenery within a relatively short amount of time.
The higher sections of the mountain offer excellent launch conditions for paragliding as well as sweeping views across Sofia and the surrounding valleys. Forest trails, open slopes and cooler mountain air make the area ideal for combining trekking with aerial adventure experiences.
You should feel comfortable hiking for several hours on mountain terrain including uneven paths and gradual climbs. A moderate level of fitness is recommended to enjoy the experience comfortably, especially during the uphill walking sections.
Comfortable outdoor clothing, supportive footwear and weather-appropriate layers are strongly recommended. Conditions on the mountain can change quickly, so lightweight waterproof layers and sunglasses are also useful to bring along.
Combining trekking and paragliding creates a much more memorable experience than simply joining a standard sightseeing tour or short flight session. Experienced mountain guides and professional flight instructors help keep the day organised, enjoyable and safe from start to finish.
Private experiences also allow for greater flexibility throughout the day, giving you more time to enjoy the mountain scenery, ask questions and fully appreciate the feeling of flying above Sofia without feeling rushed.
No previous paragliding experience is required. The flight is completed as a tandem experience alongside a professional pilot who handles the technical side of the flight while you enjoy the scenery and experience.
Before take-off, you’ll receive a safety briefing and clear instructions to help you feel comfortable and prepared.
The hiking section is rated as moderate and includes mountain trails, forest paths and gradual uphill sections. You should feel comfortable walking for several hours outdoors across uneven terrain.
The pace is designed to remain manageable while still allowing enough time to reach the paragliding launch area comfortably.
Most first-time flyers are surprised by how smooth and peaceful paragliding feels once in the air. Rather than feeling like a fast drop, the experience is more like gliding quietly above the landscape with wide panoramic views in every direction.
Flying above Sofia and the Vitosha Mountains creates an especially memorable atmosphere thanks to the combination of mountain scenery and city views below.
