Cycling off-road offers a unique challenge that demands new skills and confidence to handle the uneven terrain, climbs, and descents. These skills days provide expert coaching tailored to all levels, focusing on technique and confidence-building over relaxed group rides on gravel and singletrack trails near London. Whether you want a half-day or a full-day session, there’s plenty of time to practice key off-road skills with personalised guidance.
The half-day gravel training session is designed to help riders develop core off-road skills in a focused but relaxed environment. After meeting at a convenient local café or park within 30 miles of London, the group will ride trails and singletrack with frequent stops to explain and demonstrate techniques such as climbing, descending, cornering, and handling loose gravel and roots. Each rider gets multiple attempts with feedback to build confidence progressively. A pub stop for lunch offers a chance to chat about the session, equipment, and routes.
For those choosing the full-day session, the experience extends to longer rides with more time to practise skills on varied terrain. The day includes repeated ‘sessions’ on specific trail sections, allowing riders to tackle challenging climbs and rooty areas in depth. The pace is steady and supportive, emphasising skill acquisition over distance. Both sessions are led by a qualified British Cycling coach who adapts the content based on the group's skill level and goals.
Sessions take place within a 30-mile radius of London, with meeting points arranged to suit the group’s convenience and the coach’s base in Brixton, South West London. The area offers a mix of woodland, parks, and gravel trails suitable for developing off-road skills in a safe and accessible setting. The trails are carefully selected to include varied terrain features such as short climbs, rooty sections, and loose gravel, providing a practical environment to build technique and confidence. Access to local cafés and pubs allows for comfortable breaks and socialising during the day.
This flexible meeting arrangement ensures riders from across London and the surrounding areas can take part without long travel times. The focus remains on accessible, high-quality coaching in real-world riding conditions close to the city.
Participants should be competent cyclists who can ride for two hours or more comfortably on road or mixed terrain. While off-road experience is not essential, basic bike handling skills and fitness are required to fully benefit from the coaching sessions.
Riders should ideally have a cyclocross or gravel bike but other bike types may be suitable depending on the rider’s goals. Helmets are mandatory, and participants are advised to bring a spare inner tube, snacks, water, suitable clothing for the weather, and sunscreen.
Riders receive coaching from an experienced British Cycling qualified coach with over 20 years of leading rides and coaching across all levels. The coach also holds leadership roles within the cyclocross community and off-road cycling at notable venues, ensuring sessions are both safe and informed by deep practical knowledge.
The sessions are designed to combine technical instruction with confidence-building in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. Group sizes are kept small to provide personalised feedback and ensure every rider progresses at their own pace. Whether preparing for gravel adventures or simply looking to improve off-road handling, the coaching is tailored to individual needs within an enjoyable, low-pressure environment.
Ideally, you should use a cyclocross or gravel bike, as these are best suited for off-road trails and the types of terrain you’ll encounter during the sessions. These bikes are designed to handle loose gravel, roots, and uneven surfaces better than standard road or hybrid bikes. However, if you have a different type of bike and want to join, it’s worth discussing your bike’s suitability beforehand to ensure it’s safe and manageable for the session.
The coach can advise on bike setup and any adjustments that may help improve your riding experience. Having a bike that fits well and is mechanically sound will also make learning new techniques easier and more enjoyable. Bringing a spare inner tube and basic tools is recommended, as punctures or minor mechanical issues can occur on off-road rides.
You should be a competent cyclist able to ride comfortably for two hours or more on mixed terrain. The sessions are designed to accommodate a range of abilities, from riders new to gravel and cyclocross to those preparing for longer sportives or adventures. While prior off-road experience is not essential, having basic bike handling skills and a reasonable fitness level will help you get the most out of the day.
The coach will tailor the content to the group’s abilities, focusing on improving skills and confidence step-by-step. Riders with different skill levels will be supported individually to ensure everyone progresses at their own pace, making it suitable for those wanting to build from beginner to intermediate abilities.
The half-day session lasts around four hours and includes a mix of riding and skills coaching focused on key techniques such as climbing, descending, cornering, and handling roots and loose gravel. The group will meet at a convenient location within 30 miles of London and ride on a variety of trails with frequent stops to explain and practise techniques.
The session is relaxed and informal, prioritising skill development over distance covered. Riders get multiple opportunities to try out skills with personalised feedback to boost confidence. The day typically includes a lunch or coffee stop to rest and discuss the session before heading back.
The full-day session extends to around eight hours, allowing more time to practise skills and cover varied terrain. Riders will spend more time ‘sessioning’ challenging sections of trail, such as tricky climbs or rooty areas, giving ample opportunity to refine technique and increase confidence. There is a break for lunch at a local café or pub, where conversations often turn to routes, bikepacking, and gravel adventures.
This session is ideal for riders who want a deeper, more immersive experience with time to absorb techniques and apply them in different situations. The pace remains supportive, and the coach adapts the day to the group’s needs, focusing on building both technical ability and endurance.
You must wear a helmet for safety, and it’s important to bring a spare inner tube in case of punctures. Pack snacks and water to stay fuelled and hydrated throughout the session. Weather-appropriate clothing is essential, including layers for warmth or cooling and a rain jacket if needed.
Sunscreen is recommended when riding in sunny conditions, as well as gloves and glasses if you have them for added comfort and protection. Preparing for variable weather and trail conditions will help you get the most from the day without discomfort.
Sessions take place within a 30-mile radius of London, with meeting points arranged to suit the group and the coach’s base in Brixton, South West London. The riding locations include parks, woodland areas, and trails featuring a range of terrain challenges such as climbs, roots, and loose gravel.
This flexibility allows riders from various parts of London and surrounding areas to join without long travel times. The chosen trails offer a safe environment to learn and practise skills close to the city while providing a variety of features to develop different techniques.
