Learn the skills and techniques to snorkel safely and confidently, whether exploring Selsey’s coast or further afield. This course provides hands-on instruction in equipment use, buddy systems, rescue techniques, and practical planning to help you make the most of your time in the water. Sessions are tailored to your goals, whether you want to gain confidence, enjoy wildlife, or use snorkelling as a fun, low-impact sport.
The course begins with a planning workshop where your instructor covers equipment selection, techniques, safety, and adventure planning. You’ll learn how to prepare your mask, snorkel, and fins, and how to plan a safe and enjoyable snorkelling experience in different water environments.
Two practical sessions follow, either in open water or a pool depending on your preference. In open water, instructors take you to sites around Selsey including East Beach, West Beach, and near the Lifeboat Station, where you’ll practise finning, entry and exit, buddy systems, and self-rescue. Pool sessions are ideal for mastering skills before heading into the sea.
The final session is a guided snorkel tour to consolidate skills in a real environment. Instructors provide personalised feedback, adapt the course to your goals, and ensure that every skill is practised in safe conditions. By the end, you will be confident planning and executing snorkelling adventures independently.
Sessions take place along Selsey’s coastline, a varied environment with tidal pools, groynes, and shallow offshore areas ideal for skill practice. Selsey’s beaches provide safe and accessible locations for beginner and advanced snorkellers.
In addition, practical open water sessions allow you to connect theory from the workshop with real marine life and habitats. The coastline is rich in biodiversity, giving first-hand experience of the ecosystems discussed during training.
No prior snorkelling experience is required. The course is suitable for anyone comfortable in the water or wanting to gain confidence in a safe, structured environment.
Participants should bring swimwear, a towel, and suitable clothing for coastal conditions. Personal masks and snorkels are recommended for comfort, though a full range of equipment is available for hire. A positive attitude and curiosity are key for maximising the learning experience.
With nearly two decades of family-run experience, the team combines expert knowledge of local marine ecology with high-quality snorkelling instruction. Courses are structured to ensure small group sizes, personal attention, and safe, enjoyable learning in both pool and open water environments.
Every session supports broader marine education and conservation efforts along the Sussex coast. By learning with instructors deeply involved in citizen science, surveys, and local conservation, participants not only gain skills but also connect with ongoing efforts to protect and understand marine habitats.
Instructors offer tailored guidance for all ages and abilities, with options for one-to-one tuition or flexible dates. Every course is designed to build confidence, safety awareness, and environmental respect while making learning fun and interactive.

Skills are taught progressively, starting with basic equipment handling in a pool if needed, before moving to open water sessions.
Participants should ideally bring their own mask and snorkel for comfort and fit. Other equipment, including fins and wetsuits, can be hired during the course.
Instructors provide guidance on selection, fitting, and maintenance of equipment to ensure safety and comfort in all sessions.
The full course can be completed in a single day, including both the workshop and water sessions. Timing can be adjusted slightly based on group size or optional activities.
Open water sessions depend on weather and tides, but instructors schedule sufficient time to practise all required skills safely.
The course is suitable for children and adults alike. Young participants may require supervision and instructor guidance, ensuring learning is safe and engaging.
Sessions are designed to be adaptable, with teaching tailored to physical ability, age, and experience.
Yes, pool sessions are available for those who want to build confidence before entering the sea. This allows mastering equipment, finning, and entry/exit techniques in a controlled environment.
Once comfortable, you may transition to open water sessions to apply skills in a natural marine setting under instructor supervision.
Open water sessions take place at Selsey’s beaches, including East Beach, West Beach, and areas near the Lifeboat Station. Sites are chosen for safety, accessibility, and rich marine life.
Tidal conditions, weather, and participant experience guide the selection of specific sites each day, ensuring both safety and optimal learning opportunities.
