Learn practical navigation and seamanship skills with flexible online training designed to fit around your schedule. Combining instructor-led support with self-paced study, this course helps aspiring skippers build confidence in planning and managing coastal passages safely.
Created for aspiring skippers and developing boaters, this online theory course introduces the practical skills and knowledge needed for safe daytime coastal cruising. Training is delivered through structured online lessons featuring narrated tutorials, animations, videos, quizzes and self-assessment exercises, allowing students to progress at their own pace while still receiving full instructor support throughout the course.
Navigation training covers chartwork, passage planning, tidal heights, tidal streams, pilotage and weather interpretation, helping students understand how to make safe and informed decisions while boating. Lessons also introduce night navigation, navigation lights and the role of modern electronic navigation systems commonly found onboard cruising vessels today.
Support remains available by phone, email and video guidance whenever help is needed, making the course approachable even for those completely new to boating. Official RYA training materials are included, along with instructor feedback and repeat assessment opportunities where required. Successful completion provides a clear pathway towards the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course for sail or motor cruising.
Training is completed entirely online, making it possible to study from home or while travelling without attending classroom sessions. Flexible access allows students to fit learning around work schedules, family life and other commitments while progressing through the course at a comfortable pace.
Knowledge gained throughout the course is designed for real-world boating situations and provides an excellent foundation before progressing onto practical training afloat. Students planning future practical courses often continue their training in tidal cruising areas such as the Solent to build further confidence on the water.
No formal qualifications or previous navigation experience are required before starting this course. Beginners are welcome, and instructor support is available throughout to help students build confidence as they progress through the syllabus.
Some familiarity with boating terminology or previous time spent onboard as crew can be useful but is not essential. Students will need a computer or tablet with reliable internet access, while plotters and dividers are recommended for navigation exercises.
Training focuses on building practical understanding rather than simply completing theory exercises, helping students develop navigation knowledge they can apply confidently on the water. Flexible online delivery combined with instructor-led support creates a supportive learning environment suited to a wide range of experience levels.
Courses follow recognised RYA standards while using modern online teaching methods that make learning more engaging and accessible. Interactive lessons, realistic navigation scenarios and personalised support help students progress steadily towards their boating goals while developing confidence in safe seamanship and passage planning.
