Looking for an introduction to outdoor climbing? This guided rock climbing taster session offers the chance to learn the fundamentals of climbing in a supportive outdoor environment while enjoying some of South Wales' most impressive natural scenery. Suitable for complete beginners, it combines physical activity, problem-solving and plenty of achievement along the way.
Your session begins at Dinas Rock, where you'll meet your instructor and receive a full safety briefing before getting fitted with climbing equipment. Once everyone is comfortable and ready, you'll be introduced to the basics of outdoor climbing, including how the equipment works, essential safety practices and the techniques used to move efficiently on rock.
With guidance from an experienced instructor, you'll start tackling beginner-friendly climbing routes designed to help you develop confidence and trust in your abilities. Throughout the session, you'll learn how to position your body, use your feet effectively and approach climbing challenges with a calm and focused mindset.
As the experience progresses, you'll have opportunities to attempt different routes while receiving individual coaching and encouragement. The natural setting provides an excellent environment to learn, offering real rock surfaces and varied climbing features that make every ascent feel rewarding. Whether you arrive on your own or as part of a group, the supportive atmosphere helps participants challenge themselves at their own pace.
Dinas Rock is one of South Wales' best-known outdoor adventure locations, surrounded by woodland, rivers and dramatic rock formations. The area has long been popular with climbers due to its accessible routes and varied climbing opportunities, making it an ideal place for those taking their first steps into the sport.
Beyond the climbing itself, the surrounding landscape creates a fantastic setting for spending time outdoors. Ancient woodland, flowing rivers and towering cliffs combine to provide a memorable backdrop, allowing participants to experience a side of Wales that many visitors never see.
No previous climbing experience is required, making this session ideal for complete beginners and those curious about trying outdoor climbing for the first time. A reasonable level of mobility and comfort with physical activity will help you get the most from the experience.
Participants should arrive dressed appropriately for the weather and prepared to spend the session outdoors. A positive attitude and willingness to try something new are the only real requirements.
Experienced instructors focus on creating a safe, enjoyable and encouraging environment where everyone can develop new skills at their own pace. Whether you're attending alone, with friends or as part of a group, you'll receive guidance tailored to your confidence and ability level.
The combination of expert coaching, natural climbing routes and a welcoming atmosphere creates an experience that is both rewarding and memorable. Many participants leave with a new appreciation for climbing and a desire to continue developing their skills.
Not at all. The session is designed specifically for people who have never climbed before, as well as those with very limited experience looking to build confidence outdoors.
Everything is explained from the beginning, including how the equipment works, basic climbing movements and essential safety procedures. You'll be guided throughout the session, allowing you to learn comfortably and at your own pace.
Safety is the priority throughout the experience. All equipment is professionally maintained and instructors provide a thorough briefing before any climbing takes place.
Participants remain under supervision throughout the session, with instructors offering guidance, support and reassurance whenever needed. Routes are selected to match beginner abilities, ensuring a positive introduction to the activity.
Comfortable outdoor clothing that allows unrestricted movement is recommended. Layers are often the best option, as weather conditions can vary during the day.
Footwear with good grip is particularly important when moving around natural terrain. Avoid restrictive clothing or footwear that could make climbing uncomfortable.
Many first-time climbers are surprised to discover that climbing relies heavily on technique, balance and problem-solving rather than upper-body strength alone.
While the activity can be physically challenging, beginners are encouraged to work at a pace that feels comfortable. The instructor will help you use energy efficiently and develop good climbing habits from the start.
Outdoor conditions are monitored carefully before every session. Light rain may not necessarily prevent the activity from taking place, depending on safety considerations and climbing conditions.
Should conditions become unsuitable, alternative arrangements or rescheduling options will be discussed. Safety decisions are always made with participant wellbeing in mind.
Belaying plays an important role in climbing safety, and participants will be introduced to the purpose and principles behind it during the session.
Depending on the group's progress and available time, you may also have opportunities to practise basic belaying skills under close instructor supervision.
Absolutely. Many people book independently and quickly feel part of the group atmosphere once the session begins.
Climbing naturally encourages communication, support and shared achievement, making it easy to connect with others while enjoying the experience together.

Dave was great. Really friendly and enthusiastic, which meant we had a really fun day. Would definitely book an activity again with him. He was also accommodating to the need for it to be midweek.
Dave our instructor was super friendly and was clearly experienced. He showed a real interest in the group, the gorge walking activity, history of the landscape and clearly knew the terrain like the back of his hand. We had such a good time in mother nature! Good the the soul.
David was an amazing guide! He took the right approach, bringing a lot of fun, allowing us to explore all while making us feel secure without too heavy a hand. Good mix of banter, expertise, and easy going. He encouraged and enabled without pressuring us at all. The river was…
We had such an amazing trip with Dave! Lots of fun for adults and kids, would highly recommend and will go again!
Me and my kids had a great time, Dave gave the kids loads of confidence and made sure they got the most out of the experience
