Experience Edinburgh by bike on your terms with a fully private guided ride from the city centre to the coast and back. This looped 13-mile tour is ideal for families, groups or anyone wanting to take in the sights at their own pace, with full flexibility and personal attention throughout.
This private tour follows a flexible loop from Edinburgh’s West End to the seaside and back, travelling on bike-friendly paths, canal routes and lesser-known streets. Your guide will adjust the route based on your group’s preferences—whether you’d prefer more nature, historical stops, or quiet city corners. The ride typically passes Harrison Park, follows either the Union Canal or the Innocent Railway Path, and continues through areas like Portobello or the Shore of Leith before returning via the green spaces of New Town.
With complete control over the pace and timing, you can stop as often as you like to explore views, snap photos or ask questions. There’s usually time for a café break in Leith or by the sea—perfect for recharging and soaking up the atmosphere. Whether you're a group of friends looking for a social ride or a family with young children needing regular stops, this is your chance to see Edinburgh in a way that suits your style. Bring your own bikes or hire a hybrid or e-bike—helmets are included either way.
The tour begins outside The Caledonian Hotel at 11 Rutland Street, EH1 2AB—an easy-to-find central location just off Princes Street. From there, the route flows through a mix of historic neighbourhoods, quiet bike paths and scenic green spaces, with flexibility to include hidden tunnels, canalside views and industrial heritage spots based on your interests.
Expect to ride through areas like Dean Village, The Meadows, and the Shore of Leith, as well as the coast at Portobello depending on your route choice. You’ll also have the chance to explore Edinburgh’s lesser-known paths and backroads—those places not often found on traditional tours—while staying comfortably away from busy traffic.
Private tours are open to riders of all ages, and the route is flexible to suit your group’s needs. If you’re bringing children under 13, this is the perfect way to ensure they’re included safely and comfortably. The ride is mostly flat, with optional gentle climbs depending on route, and a basic level of bike handling is helpful.
E-bike riders must be at least 14 years old due to legal requirements, and helmets are required for all participants. Whether you’re riding with family, workmates, or old friends, the guide will make sure everyone feels confident and supported from start to finish.
With years of experience leading rides across both the Scottish landscape and the European Alps, Riccardo brings deep knowledge and genuine passion to every private tour. He’s professionally qualified, safety-trained and fully focused on making your experience as personal and enjoyable as possible—whether that means tailoring the route for kids or helping adults discover new parts of the city.
The team offers more than just a bike ride—these tours are designed to help you connect with Scotland through its paths, people and stories. From a casual city cruise to a mini adventure by the sea, you’ll see why exploring by bike is one of the best ways to experience Edinburgh. Transportation and restaurant stops can be arranged as part of your booking—just let us know what you need.
Private tours are entirely customised to your needs. That means flexible start times, your own pace, and a guide dedicated just to your group. Whether you’re travelling with children, want extra photo stops, or just prefer a more personal experience, the tour is shaped around what suits you best.
You’ll also have more control over the route—if there’s somewhere specific you'd like to see, just ask. You can go for a gentle scenic loop, focus on Edinburgh’s history, or add in more stops for food and views. It's your ride, your way.
Yes, absolutely. Private tours are ideal for families and younger children, and the route will be adapted to make sure everyone feels safe and included. The pace can be made slower, with extra breaks and simplified terrain depending on ability and comfort levels.
There’s no lower age limit, but children must be able to ride confidently. The guide will work closely with you to ensure the experience is enjoyable for all ages. E-bike riders must be 14+ by law, but kids on standard bikes are always welcome with adult supervision.
The core ride is 13 miles (21 km) and takes around 2.5 to 3 hours, with extra time allowed for meeting up and any transport needs. The route is mostly flat and uses Edinburgh’s network of bike paths, canal trails and quieter roads.
Difficulty is classed as easy to moderate, and the flexibility of a private tour means you’re never rushed. You can stop as often as you like, take detours, and enjoy the city at a relaxed pace with full support from your guide.
You can bring your own bike or hire one for the ride. The standard tour price assumes you’re using your own bike. If you’d prefer to hire, a hybrid bike is available, or a pedal-assisted electric bike. Helmets are included with either option.
All hire bikes are comfortable, well maintained and suited to the type of route you’ll be taking. If you're not sure what option is best for you, just ask—we'll help you decide what fits your ride best.
Yes. As a private booking, you can arrange optional extras like transportation, restaurant reservations or a longer café break. Let us know in advance and we’ll build it into the plan.
The guide can also recommend great local spots if you want to include food or drink stops, and you'll always have the option to pause, adjust or reroute mid-tour if the group prefers it.
The usual meeting point is outside The Caledonian Hotel, 11 Rutland Street, EH1 2AB. It's central and easy to find. If you'd prefer hotel pick-up or transport from another location, that can often be arranged as part of your private tour—just let us know during booking.
We’ll always try to accommodate your group’s needs, especially for those arriving with limited time or unfamiliar with the area. Timing and logistics are flexible, so you don’t have to worry about keeping to a strict schedule.
