Whether you're taking your first steps into open water swimming or looking to swim further with greater confidence, these weekly coached sessions provide structured guidance in a supportive environment. Designed to help every swimmer progress at their own pace, each lesson combines expert coaching with some of Pembrokeshire's best swimming locations.
Progress is at the heart of every session. Before entering the water, your coach will discuss the conditions and explain the focus for the evening, selecting a venue that offers the safest and most suitable environment based on the weather, tides and the experience of the group. This flexible approach means every session makes the most of Pembrokeshire's varied coastline while giving swimmers the confidence to enjoy changing open water conditions.
Two coaching options allow you to choose the level that's right for you. The Couch to 1km programme is ideal for swimmers looking to develop their confidence, improve technique and gradually increase the distance they can comfortably swim. Each participant works towards their own personal goal, with coaching tailored to individual ability rather than expecting everyone to progress at exactly the same pace.
For swimmers who already have some open water experience, the Swimfit sessions provide guided swims of approximately 750 to 1,500 metres while continuing to develop stamina, technique and confidence. Throughout the season you'll receive encouragement from experienced coaches, opportunities to work towards distance and skills awards, and the chance to celebrate your progress alongside fellow swimmers during the end-of-season awards event.
Every lesson takes place at a carefully selected venue rather than one permanent location. Depending on the conditions, sessions may be held at Dale, Broad Haven, Little Haven or Nolton Haven, allowing the coach to choose the safest and most enjoyable water each week.
Pembrokeshire's coastline provides an excellent variety of swimming environments, from sheltered bays that are ideal for developing confidence to larger open stretches where more experienced swimmers can continue building endurance. Final venue details are shared before each session once conditions have been assessed.
These sessions welcome swimmers with a range of experience, from those taking their first steps into open water through to regular sea swimmers wanting to improve. The most suitable group will depend on your current ability and confidence in the water.
You'll need to arrive ready to swim with appropriate equipment for the conditions. If you're unsure which session is right for you or have questions before booking, Sue is always happy to help you choose the best option.
Learning to swim confidently in open water is about much more than covering distance. Sue brings decades of experience teaching swimming, coaching lifesaving and supporting people of different abilities, creating sessions that are friendly, encouraging and focused on individual progress rather than competition.
Many returning swimmers say the supportive atmosphere is what keeps them coming back each week. Combined with extensive local knowledge and carefully chosen swimming locations, every lesson is designed to help you enjoy the sea safely while continuing to build confidence throughout the season.
These sessions are designed for a wide range of swimmers, whether you're completely new to open water or already enjoy swimming in the sea and would like to improve your technique or fitness. The coaching is adapted to suit different abilities, helping everyone progress at a pace that's comfortable for them.
If you're unsure which group would suit you best, simply get in touch before booking. Sue can talk through your current experience and recommend whether the Couch to 1km or Swimfit sessions would be the better fit.
The Couch to 1km programme focuses on helping swimmers become comfortable in open water while gradually improving confidence, stamina and technique. It's ideal if you're working towards your first kilometre or simply want more structured support.
Swimfit is aimed at swimmers who already feel confident swimming outdoors and would like to build endurance through guided swims of around 750 to 1,500 metres while continuing to refine their skills.
No. Many participants join because they want to experience open water swimming for the first time in a safe, supportive environment. Coaching covers far more than simply swimming, helping you become comfortable with different conditions and building confidence step by step.
If you've mainly swum in pools before, these sessions provide a great introduction to the differences you'll experience when swimming outdoors.
There isn't one permanent venue. Instead, each week's location is chosen according to the weather, tides and sea conditions to provide the safest and most enjoyable experience for everyone attending.
Sessions are commonly held at Dale, Broad Haven, Little Haven or Nolton Haven, with final details shared the day before the lesson.
Most swimmers bring their swimwear, wetsuit, towel, tow float and suitable footwear for walking to and from the water. Warm clothing is also recommended for changing afterwards, even during the summer months.
As Pembrokeshire's weather can change quickly, it's always worth bringing extra layers so you stay comfortable before and after your swim.
Everyone progresses differently, so there's no pressure to reach a particular distance within a certain timeframe. The Couch to 1km programme focuses on gradual improvement, helping you develop the skills and confidence needed to work towards your own goal.
Many swimmers are surprised by how quickly their confidence grows once they begin swimming regularly with experienced coaching and supportive encouragement.
