Give archery a go in the quiet village of Broughton with a relaxed outdoor session suitable for complete beginners and mixed-ability groups. Set in the school’s open playing fields, this is an easy-going and enjoyable way to learn the basics of archery while spending time outside with friends, family, or colleagues.
The session starts with a welcome and safety briefing to get everyone comfortable with the equipment and space. You’ll then be shown how to hold, load, and shoot using modern recurve bows. Instructors will demonstrate key shooting techniques and offer individual coaching throughout, helping you improve as you go.
After some practice rounds, the session usually moves into informal games and accuracy challenges, giving everyone a chance to build confidence and aim for improvement. All equipment is provided and adapted to suit a range of ages and sizes. It’s a calm but structured session led by experienced instructors who focus on safety, clear instruction, and making it fun for everyone involved.
This session takes place at Broughton Primary School, using the school’s open and grassy athletic fields as the range. It’s a quiet and peaceful spot on the edge of the village, surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The site offers a comfortable and safe environment for outdoor activities, with enough space to spread out and focus without distractions.
Broughton is a small rural village in the Scottish Borders, about 45 minutes south of Edinburgh by car. It sits between Peebles and Biggar, with plenty of countryside walking routes and small cafés nearby. The meeting point is directly at the school, where signs or staff will guide you to the field.
No previous experience is required. Sessions are beginner-friendly and open to individuals, families, and groups of all abilities. The minimum age is 8, with younger participants guided at a gentler pace and given extra support if needed.
You’ll need to be comfortable following basic instructions and standing outdoors for the duration of the session. The session goes ahead in most weather conditions, so suitable clothing is advised.
The centre is run by qualified instructors who focus on keeping sessions relaxed, engaging, and accessible for all. Group sizes are kept small so each participant gets plenty of attention and support. Equipment is included and professionally maintained, making it simple to turn up and take part.
With a beautiful countryside location and a welcoming approach, it’s a great option for families, school groups, team events, or anyone wanting to try archery for the first time in a safe and informal setting. Private sessions are available on request for special occasions or tailored group needs.

Yes, this session is designed specifically with beginners in mind. The structure starts with the very basics, including how to safely handle the bow and arrow, how to stand, aim, and shoot. You won’t need to know anything in advance, and all instructions are clearly demonstrated and reinforced with personal support during the session.
Instructors are patient and experienced with first-timers, making sure everyone is progressing comfortably and having fun. The small group size means there’s plenty of opportunity for individual feedback and help if you’re struggling with anything.
Archery sessions go ahead in most weather conditions, including light rain or cooler temperatures. Participants are advised to bring a waterproof jacket and dress in layers to stay warm and comfortable. The grassy field is well-maintained, but appropriate footwear is also recommended in case of damp ground.
If conditions are unsafe — such as high winds or thunderstorms — the session may be postponed or rescheduled. The team will get in touch in advance where possible to offer alternative options or dates. Cancellations due to extreme weather are rare but handled with flexibility.
Yes, private sessions are available and can be tailored for birthdays, stag and hen groups, school groups, or corporate team-building events. The session format can be adjusted to include more games or light competition depending on the group and occasion.
It’s recommended to enquire early if you have a particular date in mind, especially for larger groups. The instructors are used to working with different types of groups and will adapt the session to make sure it’s inclusive and enjoyable for everyone involved.
The session uses modern recurve bows which are well suited to beginners. All equipment is provided and adjusted on-site to fit different arm lengths, strengths, and comfort levels. Arm guards and all safety gear are also included to make sure each person is set up correctly.
For children or smaller adults, instructors will ensure the bow draw strength and size are appropriate so that they can shoot comfortably and safely. Equipment setup is part of the first section of the session, and instructors will be on hand to make any tweaks if needed throughout.
You’ll meet directly at Broughton Primary School, where the archery range is set up on the school’s athletic fields. Staff will be on site to welcome you and guide you to the right area. Signage or instructions may also be provided in advance.
There is free parking available nearby, either within the school grounds or in surrounding on-street areas, depending on the time and day. The location is easy to reach by car from Peebles, Biggar, or Edinburgh, and the village itself is quiet and easy to navigate.

This was a fantastic experience for my son and I on his 13th birthday. The sun was shining, the view was stunning and Craig was so friendly, organised and patient, it made the whole experience really special. Thank you so much. The rest of the family want to come next…
We were a family of four and wanted a relaxed but fun experience and we got it. Craig was patient and really helpful, especially with a low river and getting stuck. We had fun, lots of chatter and laughter.
