Challenge yourself on the cliffs of Blackford Quarry in Edinburgh with a 2.5-hour climbing and abseiling session designed for ages 10 and up. Whether you're trying climbing for the first time or looking to build on previous experience, this activity offers a safe and exciting way to learn essential techniques and enjoy time outdoors.
Your session begins with a safety briefing and introduction to the equipment before moving on to the basics of climbing technique and rope handling. Under the guidance of qualified instructors, you'll be supported as you take on a series of climbing routes. These are selected based on your ability, with options suitable for beginners and those with a bit more experience.
After climbing, the group will tackle one or two abseils down the quarry face, learning how to control descent and build trust in the equipment. The session is paced to suit the group and focuses on confidence, communication, and skill development in a supportive environment. All kit is provided, and the emphasis is on safety and encouragement throughout.
The session takes place at Blackford Quarry, just south of central Edinburgh on Blackford Glen Road. The quarry is part of a nature-rich area close to Blackford Hill and the Hermitage of Braid, offering a scenic and quiet spot for outdoor activities while still being close to the city.
Parking is available along Blackford Glen Road — you’ll be asked to drive as far up as possible and use the spaces on the left-hand side. The meeting point is within walking distance of the parking area, and detailed directions are provided after booking. The quarry offers varied routes in a sheltered location, making it suitable for all levels.
No previous climbing or abseiling experience is needed — the session is fully beginner-friendly, with all instruction and equipment provided. Routes are chosen to match the group’s ability and confidence level.
Participants should be comfortable being active outdoors and on uneven terrain. A basic level of fitness is helpful. Those under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult, and the minimum age to take part is 10.
The centre offers supportive, hands-on instruction that focuses on confidence building, safety, and having a good time outdoors. Sessions are personalised to suit different needs and skill levels, with clear guidance provided every step of the way.
Whether you’re joining to try something new, challenge yourself, or enjoy a few hours in the fresh air, this activity is a great way to experience rock climbing and abseiling in a relaxed but structured setting. We will always try to give as much notice as possible if an activity can’t go ahead. Sometimes things are out of our control and we may have to cancel with very short notice. In all cases, we will try to offer an alternative activity or location. In the event of a canceled activity by us, you will be refunded if we cannot find a suitable alternative date/time/activity for your group.
However, it’s worth saying that we will only cancel in the event that it is unsafe climb. A bit of drizzle won’t stop us! Please assume the trip is going ahead unless we contact you to say otherwise. The vast majority of our trips go ahead as planned, come rain or shine!
