Experience the famous windmills of Zaanse Schans on this 5.5-hour guided e-bike tour from Amsterdam, designed for confident cyclists aged 12 and over. Ride through traditional Dutch landscapes, visit a working cheese farm and clog workshop, and take in the heritage of the Netherlands on two wheels.
The tour begins just a short walk from Amsterdam Central Station. After meeting your guide and getting fitted for your Dutch e-bike, you'll take the free ferry across the River IJ to the north side of the city. From there, the route heads out through classic Dutch polder landscapes and alongside tree-lined canals, where your guide will point out historic buildings, local farming communities, and the lesser-seen side of Amsterdam. Along the way, you’ll stop at the colourful InnTel Hotel in Zaandam, a whimsical landmark that’s made up of stacked traditional Zaan houses.
Soon after, you’ll reach the open-air museum village of Zaanse Schans, home to several beautifully preserved windmills, some of which are still in operation. You’ll have time to explore a traditional cheese farm, watch a clog-making demonstration, and browse through small museums, including the oldest grocery shop in the Netherlands. With free time to grab lunch or snacks, the stop at Zaanse Schans offers both cultural highlights and practical comfort. The return journey takes you through quiet countryside paths, past the medieval hamlet of Haaldersbroek and through the green wetlands of Twiske Nature Reserve before a final ferry ride back into central Amsterdam.
This tour starts from Oosterdoksstraat 106, located just behind Amsterdam Central Station and close to the NEMO Science Museum. The area is easily accessible by foot, bike, or public transport. Being close to the city’s main transport hub allows for a stress-free start to your day. The location also offers excellent views over the River IJ and nearby docks, giving you a taste of Amsterdam’s relationship with water from the outset.
The cycling route moves quickly from the busy city centre to quieter districts and into true rural landscapes. You’ll explore scenic stretches of Waterland and Zaanstreek, areas known for their canals, green wooden houses, and rich agricultural heritage. Zaanse Schans itself lies north of the city in a region once central to the Dutch Golden Age thanks to its wind-powered industry. The return path winds through the quiet paths of Twiske Nature Park, giving you a peaceful end to a packed and rewarding tour.
Participants must be comfortable riding a bicycle for extended periods and in mixed environments, including cycle paths, village roads, and rural trails. Prior experience riding a bike is essential, as this is not suitable for beginners or those lacking confidence in handling a bike over longer distances. The route covers approximately 40 km (25 miles), so a good level of physical fitness and basic cycling skill is expected.
E-bikes are provided and include 8 gears and hand brakes, making the route manageable even for those not used to long-distance rides. Helmets are optional, and rain gear is provided if needed. It’s recommended to bring a small backpack with water, a snack or packed lunch, and any other essentials for the ride. The tour runs in most weather conditions, so come prepared and arrive 10–15 minutes early to avoid missing the start.
The team behind this tour has been running high-quality experiences since 1999 and brings decades of local knowledge to every ride. Guests consistently describe the guides as friendly, personable, and professional, with a relaxed approach that still ensures everyone’s safety. Small group sizes keep the experience personal, and guides are always happy to share stories, answer questions, and recommend places to visit after the ride.
Every e-bike used is something a local would ride—comfortable, reliable, and suited for long distances. The team puts care into curating unique routes that stay off the beaten path while hitting all the highlights. Whether you're a seasoned rider or just love the idea of seeing the countryside from a new angle, this is a great way to experience the Netherlands in an authentic, memorable way.
We recommend bringing a small backpack for comfort on our Dutch city bikes. These bikes are easiest to handle without shoulder bags or handbags. Inside your backpack, pack a waterproof jacket and sunscreen – Amsterdam’s weather can change quickly and unexpectedly. A water bottle is useful for staying hydrated and if you’re joining a longer ride, it’s a good idea to bring some snacks or lunch.
While we don’t stop for lunch during the tours, you’re welcome to bring food and enjoy it during one of our drink or rest stops. Our guides are always happy to see guests come prepared – especially if you’re generous with the snacks!
Bike tours in Amsterdam go ahead in nearly all weather conditions – rain or shine. Cycling is part of everyday life in the Netherlands, regardless of the forecast, and we embrace that spirit. If it rains, we provide simple rain ponchos to keep you dry during the ride. However, if you have your own rain gear that fits well and keeps you warm, we suggest bringing it along.
The only time we cancel a tour is when there's an official severe weather warning, or when winter conditions like heavy snow or ice make the roads genuinely unsafe for cycling. This happens very rarely. If a tour does need to be cancelled due to weather, we’ll contact you as soon as possible and offer alternatives or a refund.
This tour covers approximately 40 km (25 miles) over 5.5 hours, so a reasonable level of fitness is needed to comfortably complete the ride. The route includes a mix of flat rural paths, village roads, and cycle lanes. While the e-bike assists with pedalling, you should be confident riding in traffic and handling the bike on different surfaces. Previous cycling experience is essential to keep up with the group and enjoy the tour safely.
The e-bikes provided have 8 gears and hand brakes, making it easier to manage varying terrain and speeds. The guides ride at a steady pace suitable for most participants but expect to be active throughout the day. If you are used to casual cycling but haven’t ridden longer distances recently, some preparation beforehand will help you enjoy the full experience.
Yes, we do have smaller bikes available for shorter adults or teenagers. We also provide children’s bikes for kids who can confidently ride on their own. Please note that for our public tours, the minimum age is 12 years old. This is for safety reasons, as children under 12 often need more supervision and may not yet have the awareness needed to safely navigate Amsterdam’s city cycling.
If you’re travelling with younger children, we recommend booking a private tour. That way, we can tailor the route and pace to your group and offer options like cargo bikes or bikes with child seats for your younger family members.
Babies and toddlers are not allowed on our public tours due to the pace and safety requirements. However, on private tours, we can accommodate younger children with specially equipped bikes. We can provide bikes with front or rear child seats, or a Dutch-style cargo bike where little ones can ride comfortably and safely.
For health and safety, we follow local guidelines which recommend that babies should be at least 18 months old and able to sit independently before joining a bike tour. Please let us know in advance so we can have the right equipment ready for your group.
Helmets are not mandatory for cyclists in Amsterdam, and most locals don’t use them. That said, we fully support anyone who prefers to wear one for extra peace of mind. We have helmets in a range of sizes available – just let us know if you’d like one before the tour begins.
You are welcome to join the tour using your own bike if you prefer. Just be aware that our guides are only trained and equipped to handle repairs and issues with our rental bikes. If your own bike has a mechanical issue during the tour, we might not be able to assist and may have to continue the tour without you.
So if you’re confident in the condition of your bike and are comfortable taking full responsibility for it, feel free to bring it along. Otherwise, we suggest using one of our well-maintained city bikes for ease and peace of mind.
We always aim to return at the scheduled time, but we recommend allowing for a little flexibility. Due to occasional delays from traffic, route changes or unexpected stops, tours can sometimes run up to 30 minutes longer than planned.
If you have a strict schedule afterwards, we suggest not booking anything too close to the expected end time, just in case the ride goes a little over.
Our scheduled bike tours run with a minimum of 4 participants. If you’ve pre-booked online, your spot is secure – and we’ll only cancel if the tour doesn’t meet the minimum or if conditions are unsafe. In either case, we’ll always reach out to offer rescheduling or a full refund.
Tipping is not expected in the Netherlands, but it is appreciated. Our guides work hard to deliver a great experience and love what they do – a tip is a lovely way to show your appreciation if you feel they’ve gone above and beyond.
If you’re wondering how much to tip, around 15% of the tour price is a generous gesture, or approximately €50 for a half-day private tour. That said, any amount is welcome, and you're under no obligation. Your guide’s goal is to make your experience fun, informative, and memorable – with or without a tip.
