This horseback ride takes place on a private, fenced wildlife estate under the shadow of Mount Meru, less than an hour from Arusha and Kilimanjaro International Airport. Horses, wildlife and people share the same open land here, giving riders close encounters with grazing animals rarely possible on a standard trail ride.
After a short drive from Arusha to the estate, riders are matched to a suitable horse based on experience before setting off across open grassland and light bush. The estate is home to eland, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, bushbuck, impala, dik-dik and gazelle, along with a wide variety of birdlife, and riders are often able to get remarkably close to grazing herds without disturbing them.
Complete beginners are kept to a gentle walking pace on quieter paths, while more experienced riders can pick up the tempo and enjoy open stretches at a canter or gallop under a guide's supervision. On a clear day, Mount Kilimanjaro is visible on the horizon beyond the nearer slopes of Mount Meru.
The Dolly Wildlife Estate sits in the Usa River area, a rural stretch of countryside between Arusha and Kilimanjaro International Airport that mixes ranch land with pockets of wild bush. The estate is fenced but large enough that wildlife moves freely within it, giving the ride a genuine safari feel without leaving the saddle.
Arusha itself remains a comfortable base before or after the ride, with a wide choice of hotels, and the estate's location close to the airport also makes this a convenient activity to slot in on an arrival or departure day. Mount Meru dominates the skyline throughout the ride, with Kilimanjaro visible further off in clear conditions.
No previous riding experience is required, since beginners are paired with calm horses and kept to an easy pace throughout. Anyone with a fear of animals or limited mobility should mention this when booking so the ride can be adjusted accordingly.
Riders who are comfortable in the saddle and want a faster pace should let the team know in advance, since horses and routes are matched to ability on the day. Comfortable, closed toe shoes and long trousers are recommended for anyone taking part.
Guides on this ride know the estate's wildlife and terrain well, and are practised at matching horses and pace to riders of very different abilities within the same group. The setting itself, with animals grazing freely around the trails, is a genuinely different experience from a standard riding centre.
Its location close to Arusha and the airport also makes it an easy activity to fit around flights or other plans, whether as a relaxed introduction to riding or a proper gallop for those with more experience.
